Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Four habits prevent most avoidable appliance repairs: clean the dryer lint trap every load and the exhaust annually, clean the refrigerator condenser coils, clean the dishwasher filter regularly, and check door seals. These take minutes and head off repairs priced at $60–$250 each, on machines that typically last 8–15 years.
Dryer venting is the one with real stakes. Regular lint trap cleaning and annual exhaust cleaning are the standard recommendation, both to keep the dryer working and to prevent lint buildup, which is a fire risk. A restricted vent also makes the dryer run longer and hotter, which shortens a machine already rated for only 8–12 years.
Refrigerator condenser coils. Dust on the coils makes the compressor work harder. A condenser coil repair is $60–$100, but a compressor is $500–$1,000 — and refrigerators average around 13 years, so anything that overworks the compressor is expensive.
Dishwasher filters. A clogged filter causes residue on dishes ($50–$300 to have someone fix), bad smells ($50–$400), and drainage complaints ($50–$400). Cleaning it yourself is free and takes a couple of minutes. Filters as a part are only $50–$125, so this is the highest-return maintenance in the kitchen.
Door seals. A refrigerator door gasket is $60–$100 to replace and a failing one makes the whole machine run constantly. Washer and dishwasher gaskets, at $50–$150 for a dishwasher, are what stand between you and a floor leak. Wipe them, check them for tears, and replace them before they fail rather than after.
Maintenance is also an energy question on refrigerators. ENERGY STAR notes that a refrigerator over 15 years old could be costing about $95 per year to run, and that older units use roughly 20% more energy than certified models. Keeping the current one efficient matters, and knowing when it's past helping matters more.
