How concrete retaining wall actually works

  1. Height, surcharge and whether engineering is required

    Wall height, soil type, slope above, and loads near the top decide whether a standard detail works or a structural design is mandatory. Many jurisdictions trigger engineering and permits above modest heights. Guessing is how walls rotate in year three.

    Watch for: A crew that "always pours them this way" with no reference to height, soil or surcharge. That is folklore, not design.

  2. Choose concrete wall versus landscape systems

    Segmental block with proper geogrid handles many residential landscape grades and is often faster and more flexible aesthetically — hardscaping owns that path. Poured concrete wins when geometry, height, impact resistance or architectural finish demand a monolithic structure.

    Watch for: Being sold cast concrete for a two-foot planting bed wall. That is usually the expensive answer to a simple problem.

  3. Excavation, footing and subdrain

    The footing needs competent bearing and frost-aware depth where climate requires it. Behind the wall, free-draining backfill and a collection drain keep hydrostatic pressure from multiplying the load the steel must resist. Weep paths or outlets must daylight somewhere safe.

    Watch for: Clay backfilled tight to a waterproofed face with no drain. Beautiful forms, guaranteed future lean.

  4. Form, reinforce, pour, cure

    Forms set alignment and batter; rebar is placed to the design; concrete is placed and consolidated. Control of cold joints and curing matters on exposed architectural faces. Anchor points for rails or fences should be planned before the pour, not epoxied as an afterthought whenever possible.

    Watch for: Rail posts planned after a finished pour with no embed or provision. Retrofit anchors on the edge of a thin stem are weak practice.

  5. Backfill in lifts and final grade

    Backfill goes in controlled lifts so the fresh wall is not shoved by a single heavy dump. Final grade sends surface water to drains, not into the backfill zone. Landscaping against the wall should not block weeps.

    Watch for: Heavy equipment compacting against a green wall. Timing and lift thickness are structural issues, not niceties.

  6. Inspection and handover

    Where permits apply, inspections often hit footing, steel and final. You should receive any engineer letters, product data for drains, and a simple note on what not to do above the wall (stockpiles, additions, redirected downspouts).

    Watch for: No documentation on an engineered wall. Future buyers and insurers will ask.

  7. Protect the wall face and neighbours during excavation

    Cuts for tall walls move a lot of soil. Shoring, temporary drainage and neighbour notification may be required. Spoil placement matters — piling excavated soil on the high side of a temporary slope can create the instability you were hired to fix.

    Watch for: Uncontrolled stockpiles against fences or on soft slopes. Excavation logistics are part of structural safety.
