There are three accepted ways to deal with it, they cost wildly different amounts, and almost nothing online helps you choose.
Aluminium branch wiring, used widely in US homes from around 1965 to 1974, is not inherently unsafe as a conductor — the hazard is at the connections. Aluminium expands, creeps and oxidises differently from copper, and terminations made with devices and methods intended for copper loosen and overheat over time. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has found homes with this wiring far more likely to have connections reaching fire-hazard conditions. Repair means fixing every termination, not replacing every wire.

Confirm it is branch-circuit aluminium, not something else
Aluminium is still entirely normal and correct for large feeders — service entrance conductors, range and dryer circuits, subpanel feeds. The concern is specifically small-gauge aluminium on 15 and 20 amp branch circuits feeding ordinary outlets and lights. An electrician confirms which you have before recommending anything.
Watch for: A quote to remediate the whole house triggered by aluminium seen in the panel. Large aluminium feeders in the panel prove nothing about the branch circuits behind your walls.
Survey every termination
The scope of this job is counted in connections, not in feet of cable. That means every receptacle, every switch, every light fixture, every junction box, every splice in the attic, and the panel terminations. The survey establishes how many there are and how many are already showing heat damage.
Watch for: A per-device price quoted without a count. Boxes nobody found do not get repaired, and the ones nobody found are usually the buried splices that are most likely to be failing.
Choose the repair method
Three approaches are generally accepted. Pigtailing with a connector specifically listed for joining aluminium to copper puts a short copper tail on each aluminium conductor so ordinary devices can be used. COPALUM crimping permanently joins a copper pigtail with a special crimp sleeve and is the method the CPSC has described as its preferred permanent repair. Full rewiring in copper removes the aluminium entirely. They differ in permanence, price and — critically — in what your insurer will accept.
Watch for: Being offered only the method the contractor happens to be equipped for. COPALUM in particular requires a certified installer with manufacturer-controlled tooling, so a firm without it has a reason not to mention it.
Devices rated for the job, where devices are being reused
Where aluminium conductors land directly on a device rather than being pigtailed, the device must be rated for aluminium. Ordinary receptacles and switches are not, and neither are most of the ones sold at retail. Getting this wrong recreates exactly the failure the repair was meant to eliminate.
Watch for: Standard hardware-store devices installed on aluminium conductors. This is common, it looks tidy, and it is the single most frequent bad outcome in this trade.
The connections you cannot see
Ceiling fixtures, attic and crawlspace junction boxes, and splices buried behind a fixture canopy are where failures concentrate, because they run hot and nobody ever opens them. A remediation that only covers accessible receptacles and switches has left the highest-risk terminations untouched.
Watch for: A scope defined as "outlets and switches". Ask explicitly whether fixtures and junction boxes are included, and what happens with any splice found buried in a wall with no box.
Permit, inspection and the documentation you will need later
This is permitted work in most jurisdictions. Beyond the safety value, the paperwork is the asset: insurers and buyers want the permit, the inspection sign-off, a statement of the method used, and a count of the terminations treated.
Watch for: Work done without a permit because "it is only devices". You will be asked for evidence at renewal or at sale, and a receipt is not evidence.
Remediation is priced per connection, so the total depends on how many devices, fixtures and junction boxes your home has — commonly a few thousand dollars for approved-connector work in an average house. COPALUM sits higher and full copper rewiring is several times that. Insurers occasionally contribute; ask before you book.

COPALUM requires manufacturer-controlled tooling and certification. If a firm cannot offer it, you want to hear that plainly rather than hear it dismissed.
Exactly which connector are you using, and is it listed for aluminium-to-copper?
Ask for the product name and get it on the invoice. It is the one detail an insurer or a future buyer may ask you to produce.
Does the scope include light fixtures and junction boxes, or only receptacles and switches?
The hottest, least-inspected connections in the house are the ones people leave out of the scope.
Where devices are being reused, are they rated for aluminium conductors?
Ordinary retail devices are not, and installing them on aluminium reproduces the original defect.
What documentation will I get for my insurer?
Permit, inspection sign-off, method statement and termination count. Agree this before the work, because assembling it afterwards is much harder.
