Knob and tube replacement - do you have to do all of it?
Knob-and-tube is not automatically illegal, and phased replacement is often both permitted and sensible. What actually forces the job is usually your insurer, your lender, or a plan to insulate the attic.
What is knob and tube replacement?
Knob-and-tube was the standard wiring method in US homes from roughly the 1880s to the 1940s: individual conductors run through ceramic tubes and supported on ceramic knobs, with no equipment ground and rubber-and-cloth insulation that embrittles with age. Replacement means running modern grounded cable to the affected outlets, switches and fixtures. Whether that means the whole house or a few circuits depends on how much is still live - and quite often it is less than people assume.
Signs you need knob and tube replacement
- Ceramic knobs and tubes visible on joists and studs in the attic, basement or crawlspace, with wires still landing in live boxes
- Two-prong outlets throughout the original part of the house and no ground at the receptacles
- Cloth-wrapped conductors whose covering is brittle, cracking or flaking away where you touch it
- Splices made in mid-air with soldered joints and tape rather than inside an enclosed box
- You want to insulate the attic or walls and the insulation contractor has stopped work over the wiring

How knob and tube replacement actually works
Establish how much is actually live
A great many houses have knob-and-tube that was abandoned decades ago and simply never removed. Dead wire on a joist is a housekeeping issue; live wire feeding your bedroom is not. The first job is to trace what is still energised and what it serves - often the answer is upstairs lighting and a handful of receptacles rather than the whole house.

Map the conflict with insulation
Knob-and-tube was designed to shed heat into open air, which is why it is run spaced off framing. Burying it in insulation defeats that, and current code in most jurisdictions prohibits covering live knob-and-tube with thermal insulation. This is why energy-efficiency work and rewiring so often arrive together, and why utility and weatherisation programmes sometimes contribute to the electrical cost.

When knob and tube replacement is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- The knob-and-tube in your attic is dead. Abandoned wiring that was disconnected decades ago is not a hazard and is not a reason to rewire. Have it confirmed dead and, ideally, removed where it is in the way of insulation - that is a tidy-up, not a project.
- Only part of the house still has it. Where original circuits are confined to one floor or a few rooms, replacing those runs achieves the same insurance and safety outcome as a whole-house rewire for far less. Ask for the partial scope to be priced alongside the full one.
- You are gut-renovating within a year or two. Running new cable through finished walls and then demolishing those walls means paying the access cost twice. Unless something is actively unsafe, sequence the wiring into the renovation.
- Nobody has checked what your insurer actually requires. Some carriers accept partial replacement with documentation, some require complete removal, and some do not surcharge at all. Getting that in writing first can change the scope you buy - and occasionally shows the job is not urgent.
- The house sells as a renovation project. A buyer intending to gut the house does not benefit from new wiring in walls they will remove. Disclosure with quotes in hand is sometimes the better financial outcome than doing the work yourself first.
- You are being sold a rewire to fix a symptom. Flickering, a dead outlet or a tripping fuse can all come from a single failed connection. Knob-and-tube deserves a plan; it does not mean every fault in the house is a whole-house problem.

What to check when hiring for knob and tube replacement
- Which knob-and-tube circuits did you find live, and how did you test them? The live/dead split determines the size of the job. It should be a finding, not an assumption from the house's age.
- Can you price a phased scope as well as a full one? An electrician willing to quote both is giving you a real choice. One who insists on all-or-nothing is worth a second opinion.
- Is there insulation over any live knob-and-tube in this house? If there is, it changes the urgency and the priority ordering, and it is something an insulation contractor may already have flagged.
- How will you make the old conductors dead, and will any be removed? Disconnected at both ends is the standard. Removal where accessible is better, particularly if you are insulating afterwards.
- Does this include the panel, and do I have spaces for the new circuits? New grounded circuits need somewhere to land. A knob-and-tube house usually has an original fuse box and no room at all.
- Will you give me a written statement of exactly which circuits were replaced? This is the document your insurer or your buyer will ask for. It needs to be specific, especially if the work is phased.
- Who patches the openings, and is that in the price? Plaster and lath does not cut back neatly. In an older home, making good is a bigger line item than people expect and is usually excluded.
