  1. Establish how much is actually live

    A great many houses have knob-and-tube that was abandoned decades ago and simply never removed. Dead wire on a joist is a housekeeping issue; live wire feeding your bedroom is not. The first job is to trace what is still energised and what it serves - often the answer is upstairs lighting and a handful of receptacles rather than the whole house.

  2. Map the conflict with insulation

    Knob-and-tube was designed to shed heat into open air, which is why it is run spaced off framing. Burying it in insulation defeats that, and current code in most jurisdictions prohibits covering live knob-and-tube with thermal insulation. This is why energy-efficiency work and rewiring so often arrive together, and why utility and weatherisation programmes sometimes contribute to the electrical cost.

  • Nobody has checked what your insurer actually requires. Some carriers accept partial replacement with documentation, some require complete removal, and some do not surcharge at all. Getting that in writing first can change the scope you buy - and occasionally shows the job is not urgent.
  • The house sells as a renovation project. A buyer intending to gut the house does not benefit from new wiring in walls they will remove. Disclosure with quotes in hand is sometimes the better financial outcome than doing the work yourself first.

Less than you might fear, because much of the old wiring is reached from the attic and basement, which is where the runs concentrate in these houses. Expect openings at devices and along wall runs that cannot be fished, and expect more of them in a plaster-and-lath house than in a drywalled one.
