Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Most home chargers live in a garage — and most regrets are about height, cable reach, door tracks and which side the charge port is on. We focus on garage geometry and indoor runs, then match you with electricians who dry-fit the cable before they drill.
A garage EV charger install places a Level 2 unit (or a 240-volt receptacle for a plug-in unit) on a dedicated circuit where you park under roof. The electrical steps match other Level 2 jobs; the garage-specific work is siting for port side, door clearance, cable management and the route from panel to bay. A well-sited garage unit is the most convenient home charging experience most drivers will ever have.

Park the car the way you really park
Nose-in versus back-in, which bay, how close to the wall, mirrors and door swing. Mark the charge-port position on the floor with tape. Siting without the car present is guesswork.
Watch for: Mounting on the “easy wall” nearest the panel while the port lives on the opposite side of the car every day.
Choose wall, and height, and holster path
Mounting height should let you handle the connector without dragging the full cable weight across the hood. Holster orientation should not block pedestrian paths or the garage door’s sensors and tracks.
Watch for: Units that interfere with the garage door opener rail or photo-eye beams. Door service calls are a miserable way to discover a conflict.
Plan the indoor route from panel to bay
Attached garages may pull through attic, basement or surface conduit. Finished garages hide work differently than open stud bays. Fishing through insulation and fire separation details matters in attached garages.
Watch for: Quotes that ignore fire-rated separation between house and garage. Penetrations have rules; good electricians already know them.
Detached garage: treat the feeder as its own project
If power to a detached garage is inadequate, the charger job becomes a feeder, trench or aerial discussion. That scope is larger than a wall unit on an existing garage subpanel.
Watch for: A cheap wall-unit price that quietly assumes a garage subpanel you do not have.
Install, manage the cable, commission
Circuit, mount, terminate, set current, test a full park-and-plug cycle with the door closed and open. Confirm the cable reaches without crossing the pedestrian lane every time.
Watch for: Cable left in a pile where car tires or door tracks will find it. Hooks and holsters are not optional accessories in a working garage.
Cold-weather indoor habits
Even inside, unheated garages stiffen cables. Mounting and slack storage still matter. Preconditioning the cabin while plugged in is a vehicle setting worth configuring at handover.
Watch for: Assuming “indoors” means heated. Many garages are only slightly milder than outside.
Garage installs on an attached garage with spare panel capacity and a short run are often the lower-cost Level 2 scenario. Finished walls, long indoor fish, or feeding a detached garage raise labour quickly. See the EV chargers cost guide for run-length drivers.
