An outdoor EV charger install is the same electrical work as a garage install plus three things: a unit and enclosure rated for continuous exposure, a protected route for the circuit across open ground, and a mounting arrangement that survives weather, sun and being near a moving car. The route is the expensive part. If the charger sits on an exterior wall next to the panel, the job is close to an indoor one; if it sits on a pedestal at the end of a driveway or on a detached garage, the trench and conduit can cost more than the charger.

How outdoor ev charger installation actually works

  1. Confirm the unit is rated for where it is going

    Outdoor-rated is not a marketing word; enclosure ratings are published on the manufacturer's spec sheet and describe what the unit is tested against — driven rain, dust, ice. Check the rating for the actual unit and the actual location, including whether it will be under cover or fully exposed, and whether the connector holster is rated too.

    Watch for: A unit sold as suitable for garages being mounted on an open wall because it was cheaper. Also check the cable and connector, not just the box — the connector spends its life lying in a holster taking whatever falls on it.

  2. Decide between wall mounting and a pedestal

    A wall or post on an existing structure is cheaper and gives the cable something to hang from. A pedestal is a free-standing post set in the ground, which is what you need when the parking space is not next to a wall — a driveway apron, a parking pad, a spot beside the house. Pedestals need a footing, and the circuit has to arrive underground.

    Watch for: A pedestal placed where a car door opens into it, or where a plough or a reversing driver will find it. Bollard protection or a kerb is cheap insurance next to replacing a struck unit and its footing.

  3. Plan the route — this is where the money goes

    Getting the circuit from the panel to an outdoor location means either running along the building and out through the wall, or crossing open ground. Crossing ground means a trench of a depth your local rules specify, conduit or cable rated for direct burial, and putting the surface back. Across grass that is a day's work. Across a finished driveway it means cutting and patching, or boring underneath it.

    Watch for: A quote that assumes an easy trench across lawn when the actual line crosses a driveway, a patio, tree roots, a septic field or an irrigation line. Get the assumed route written into the quote, and get utilities located before anyone digs — that call is free and hitting a buried service is not.

  4. Weatherproofing every penetration and termination

    Where the circuit leaves the building, where it enters the conduit, where it enters the charger — every one of those is a place water will try to get in, and the ones on the underside are the ones that matter. Proper fittings, correct sealing and a drip loop are not finishing touches; they are the difference between a unit that lasts and one that corrodes from the inside.

    Watch for: Sealant used as a substitute for the right fitting. Silicone smeared around a hole is a sign of an installer improvising, and it fails silently a couple of winters later when nobody is looking at it.

  5. Sun, cold and the things that age an outdoor unit

    Two climates attack outdoor chargers differently. Sun degrades plastics and washes out screens, so a west-facing wall in a hot region is the worst spot available and a small hood or an eave changes the unit's lifespan meaningfully. Deep cold makes charging cables stiff and awkward to handle — genuinely so, to the point where cable material and length become a comfort decision rather than a spec decision.

    Watch for: A long cable chosen for reach and then left coiled on the ground where it freezes into slush, gets driven over, and gets dragged across grit. A wall-mounted cable management hook is a few dollars and is the difference between a cable that lasts and one that does not.

  6. Ground-fault protection in wet conditions

    Outdoor charging circuits are protected against ground faults, and moisture at the connector or in the vehicle inlet can produce enough leakage to trip that protection without anything being broken. It is a real and common annoyance, and it is worse where the connector gets rained on directly or sits in standing water.

    Watch for: Assuming the charger has failed when it only trips in the rain. Dry the connector and the vehicle inlet, get the holster mounted so it drains rather than collects, and see whether the pattern goes away before you replace anything.   7. Theft, tampering and unwanted use

    An outdoor charger is a valuable item on the street side of your property with a cable somebody can cut off. Depending on where you live this ranges from irrelevant to a genuine planning factor. Options include mounting where it is overlooked, a lockable holster, access control via the unit's app so it will not deliver power to a stranger, and simply putting it where a light already shines.

    Watch for: Relying on the unit being "smart" as security. Access control stops someone charging for free; it does nothing about a cable being cut. If theft is a real concern in your area, siting and lighting do more than settings do.

Units designed for outdoor use are built and tested for it, and the connector is designed to be handled outdoors. That is not the same as saying exposure is free. Continuous sun degrades the housing and the display, driven rain finds any penetration that was not sealed properly, and grit and salt work at the connector every time it is plugged in. An outdoor-rated unit in a sheltered position — under an eave, inside a carport, on the lee side of a wall — will comfortably outlast the same unit fully exposed on a west wall. If you have a sheltered option, take it.
Enough that it should be priced explicitly rather than folded into a headline number. What drives it is the distance, what the trench crosses, and how hard the ground is. Open lawn is the cheap case. Crossing a driveway, a patio, mature tree roots or an irrigation system moves it into a different bracket, and boring under hard surfacing is specialist work. Two useful moves: get the run priced per foot so you can compare quotes properly, and if there is any chance you will want power out there for anything else, run a larger conduit while the ground is open.
Use a wall or an existing post whenever one is in the right place. It is cheaper, it gives the cable somewhere to live, and it puts the unit above splash and snow. A pedestal is the answer when there is genuinely no structure at the parking spot, and it brings a footing, an underground feed and a higher exposure to being struck by a vehicle or a plough. If you go pedestal, spend a little on protection around it and site it clear of door swings and turning circles.
Outdoor-rated units are built for the temperature range the manufacturer publishes, and cold does not generally harm the electronics. What cold changes is handling: charging cables stiffen substantially, which makes plugging in awkward and puts strain on the connector and the cable entry when you force it. It also means a cable left coiled on the ground can freeze into ice. The practical answers are unglamorous — mount the unit at a comfortable height, keep the cable on a hook rather than the floor, and think about cable length in terms of what you will actually be wrestling with in January.
Because moisture is producing enough leakage current to satisfy the ground-fault protection on the circuit even though nothing is broken. The usual sources are water sitting in the vehicle inlet, a connector holster that collects rather than drains, or a penetration letting damp into an enclosure. Before treating it as a fault, dry the connector and the inlet thoroughly, check the holster is oriented to shed water, and look for standing water anywhere on the assembly. If it also trips in dry weather, it is not moisture and you are into real fault-finding.
