  1. Decide what you want the connection to do for you

    Before anyone talks about parts, get clear on which of three things you value: maximum output from your circuit, the ability to unplug and take the unit somewhere else, or the ability to replace a dead unit in ten minutes without booking an electrician. Hardwired serves the first. Plug-in serves the second and third. Most people can name their priority in one sentence once they are asked.

    Watch for: Being told one method is "code" and the other is not. Both are ordinary, permitted installation methods. What varies is what your particular unit is listed for, where it is being installed, and what your inspector expects — which is a question for your electrician and your local inspector, whose adopted code cycle varies.

  2. Check what your chosen unit supports — many support both

    A lot of chargers ship as plug-in and can be converted to hardwired, and some are sold in both configurations. Crucially, several models are rated for a lower maximum current in their plug-in form than in their hardwired form. If output matters to you, read the manufacturer's spec sheet for the specific configuration, not the headline number on the box.

    Watch for: Assuming the plug-in and hardwired versions of the same model behave identically. Derating on the plug-in configuration is common enough that you should check rather than assume, and it is the single most common reason someone ends up disappointed with the speed they paid for.

  3. If plug-in: choose the receptacle deliberately, not by price

    This is the part of a plug-in install that decides whether it ages well. The receptacle carries the full charging current for hours at a time, several nights a week, for years — a duty cycle that ordinary household wiring devices are simply not built around. Industrial-grade and commercial-grade receptacles are built with better contact material and clamping pressure, and they cost a fraction of the total job.

    Watch for: A budget receptacle fitted because it was in the van. The failure mode is not dramatic at first: the contacts loosen, resistance rises, the connection heats, the plug face discolours, and eventually you have melted plastic and a scorch mark. Ask which receptacle is being fitted, by name, and ask for the cheap one to be swapped. It is the highest-value ten dollars in the entire project.

  4. If plug-in: understand the ground-fault protection interaction

    A receptacle-fed charging circuit typically has to be protected in a way a hardwired one may not, which usually means a specific breaker type rather than a standard one. Chargers also contain their own internal ground-fault detection. Two layers of protection stacked on one circuit is a well-known source of nuisance tripping, where nothing is actually wrong but the charge session ends anyway.

    Watch for: An installer who has never encountered this and blames the car when the breaker starts tripping. Ask up front how they handle it. What protection is required in your situation is a question for your electrician and your inspector — requirements differ by jurisdiction and by code cycle adopted — but the interaction itself is real and worth raising before the work, not after.

  5. If hardwired: the run, the disconnect and the strain relief

    The circuit terminates directly inside the unit. Your electrician sizes the conductors for the circuit, provides any required means of disconnection, and terminates the cable into the charger with proper strain relief and the correct fitting for the location. Outdoors, that fitting and its seal are doing real work.

    Watch for: Conductors that are stiff and forced into a tight terminal, or a cable entry left without a proper gland. Both make a good connection into a mediocre one, and a mediocre high-current connection is the thing that heats up years later.

  6. Set the charger to the circuit, then test under load

    Whichever method you chose, the unit's maximum current setting must match the circuit installed behind it. Then it should be run with the car connected and checked warm rather than signed off cold. On a plug-in install, put a hand near the receptacle after a solid charging session — it should be unremarkable.

    Watch for: A plug or receptacle that is noticeably hot after an hour of charging, at any point in the unit's life. That is not "normal for high current"; it is the early stage of the classic receptacle failure. Stop charging on it and get it looked at.

A well-executed version of either is fine. What makes plug-in installs riskier in practice is not the concept but the parts: the receptacle is a wear item carrying high current for long, repeated sessions, and the inexpensive ones were never designed for that duty. Fitted with a quality commercial or industrial-grade device and properly torqued terminations, a plug-in install is a sound piece of work. Fitted with the cheapest device on the shelf, it is the most common failure point in home EV charging. Hardwiring removes that component from the equation entirely, which is why it is the default for permanent, high-current, outdoor installs.
You should not treat this as a plug-and-go option even when the plug physically fits. That circuit was sized and protected for a different appliance with a very different duty cycle, the receptacle may be old and worn, and sharing it means one of the two things gets unplugged constantly — which is exactly the repeated mating and unmating that wears a receptacle out. There are purpose-made splitting devices for sharing a circuit between a dryer and a charger, and whether one is acceptable in your situation is a question for your electrician and your inspector. Have the existing circuit assessed before you rely on it.

It is electrician work rather than a user task, and it is not always available on every model, so check the specific unit's documentation before you buy on the assumption that you can. Converting in the other direction, from hardwired to plug-in, means installing a receptacle and possibly changing the unit's cable arrangement, and is generally the more involved of the two.
