Energy management systems, meter collars, load-side taps and charger-to-charger power sharing all let an EV fit into a house that is supposedly out of capacity — including two EVs. Here is how each works, what it costs you in charging speed, and where it does not apply.

Load management means your EV charger shares your existing electrical capacity with the rest of the house instead of demanding a permanent allocation of its own. A device watches what the house is drawing and tells the charger to slow down or pause when everything else is running, then lets it go full speed when the house is quiet — which, overnight, is almost always. That is usually enough to fit an EV into a service that a load calculation says is full, and it is the reason a lot of quoted panel upgrades are avoidable.

How load management for ev charging actually works

  1. Understand what the constraint actually is

    Capacity problems come in two shapes and they have different solutions. Either the panel has no physical space left for another breaker, or the service itself is already committed to as much load as it can carry. Load management addresses the second and sometimes helps with the first. Establishing which one you have is the first question to ask, and it is answered by the calculation, not by looking at the panel door.

    Watch for: Being sold a solution before the constraint is identified. A device that manages load does nothing for a panel that has simply run out of breaker spaces, and a bigger panel does nothing for a service that is genuinely maxed out.

  2. Option one, the free one: turn the charger down

    Every Level 2 charger has a configurable maximum current, and setting it lower reduces the load your installation adds. For a car parked from evening to morning, a lower setting frequently still returns far more range than the day used. This costs nothing, needs no extra hardware, and is the option most often left unmentioned.

    Watch for: The setting being changed without the circuit being changed to match, or the reverse. The charger setting and the breaker behind it have to agree, and the installer should confirm both to you.

  3. Option two: an energy management system that watches the whole house

    These monitor total consumption — at the panel, at the meter, or through breaker-level sensing — and instruct the charger to throttle back or pause when the rest of the house spikes. When the oven, dryer and air conditioning all run at once, the car waits a few minutes. When they stop, it resumes. The car does not care; the house never exceeds its limit.

    Watch for: Acceptance. This is the real constraint on these devices, not the technology. Which products your inspector will approve varies by jurisdiction and by the code cycle adopted locally. Ask your electrician which devices have been signed off in your area recently, and treat that as the shortlist.

  4. Option three: connect somewhere other than the panel

    A load-side tap connects the charger between the meter and the panel rather than adding a breaker inside it, and a meter collar is a device that fits at the meter itself to provide a connection point. Both can serve a charger without the panel needing more room. Availability of meter collars in particular depends heavily on your utility — some support them, some do not.

    Watch for: Assuming your utility permits it. Anything that touches the meter is the utility's territory and needs their agreement before it is designed in. Ask them directly rather than relying on the installer's recollection from a different service area.

  5. Option four: two cars sharing one supply

    If you have two EVs, chargers from the same manufacturer can usually be configured as a group that divides one supply between them rather than each needing its own full provision. Both cars plug in overnight and the units split the available current, often finishing both anyway because the total energy needed is well within the hours available. This is normally far cheaper than two independent installs.

    Watch for: Mixing brands. Coordination between units is generally a within-manufacturer feature, so buying two different chargers usually removes the option. If a second EV is even plausible, decide this before the first install.

  6. Scheduling — and the three places you can set it

    Off-peak charging can be scheduled in the car, in the charger, or by the utility through a managed-charging programme. They do different things and can fight each other: a schedule in the car and another in the charger will produce a window that is the overlap of the two, which is a very common reason people wake up to a car that did not charge.

    Watch for: Setting a schedule in two places. Pick one and turn the other off. If you enrol in a utility programme, check what control it takes and whether you can override it on a night when you need a full car.

  7. Commission it and then actually test the failure case

    A managed installation should be tested with the house loaded, not with everything switched off. Run the oven and the dryer while the car charges and confirm the charger backs off as intended. That is the only proof the system does what it was bought to do.

    Watch for: A system signed off on a quiet house. If it has never been observed throttling, nobody knows whether the sensing is installed the right way round — a genuinely common installation error that only shows up under load.

The reason it works so well is arithmetic: two cars parked overnight have many hours available, and the combined energy they need is usually far less than the combined speed they could theoretically draw. The catch is that sharing is generally a within-brand feature, so decide on the manufacturer before the first unit goes on the wall.

That depends on your jurisdiction and the code cycle it has adopted, and it is the single most important thing to establish before buying hardware. A useful shortcut is asking an installer which specific devices they have had passed locally in the last year — that is a far better guide than any manufacturer's marketing claim about compliance.

For a house with a full panel it can be an elegant answer. The constraint is not technical but institutional: the meter belongs to your utility, so the utility has to permit the device and the arrangement, and support varies widely between utilities and even between service territories. Almost always, and often by a large multiple — a device and its commissioning against a service upgrade with permits, utility coordination and a day or more of work.
