What is panel upgrade for an ev charger?

Adding an EV charger does not automatically require a panel upgrade, and a lot of homeowners are quoted one who did not need it. Three things can create room without replacing anything: running the charger at a reduced current setting, fitting a load-management device that pauses or throttles charging when the rest of the house is busy, or connecting on the load side of the service ahead of the panel. Whether any of them fits your house depends on your actual load figures and on what your local inspector accepts - but they should all be on the table before you agree to an upgrade.

   Get the number, not the verdict

   Ask the electrician to show you the load calculation rather than the conclusion. It is a standard piece of work and any competent electrician can produce it. If someone will not show it to you, that alone is a reason to get a second quote.

   Rule out the three cheaper routes first

   A charger set to draw less current is often perfectly adequate for overnight charging. A load-management device lets the charger back off when the dryer and the oven are running.    When the answer really is more capacity, the upgrade is a substantial job with its own permits, utility involvement and timeline, and it deserves its own quotes rather than being a line item under a charger install.
