How driveway paver installation actually works

  1. Establishing the load case and the design

    Passenger cars, a truck, an RV, or a delivery vehicle that has to turn on the apron are different design cases. So is the apron itself, which usually sees the heaviest and most concentrated loading of the whole driveway.

  2. Right-of-way, aprons and the part the town controls

  3. Excavation to a driveway depth

    Considerably deeper than a patio excavation, because the base has to be thicker. All organic material comes out, the subgrade is proof-rolled or compacted, and soft spots are excavated and replaced rather than covered.

    Watch forSubgrade that pumps or ruts under the machine and is then built over anyway. That soft area will show up as a dip in the finished surface within a couple of years, right where the wheels run.

  4. Base construction and geotextile separation

    Aggregate is placed and compacted in lifts to a depth suited to the soil, the climate and the traffic. Over soft or clay soils a geotextile separation layer is often placed between subgrade and base so the two do not mix and the base does not sink into the ground.

  5. Choosing the paver and the pattern

    Driveway pavers are thicker than patio units, and the laying pattern is normally herringbone at an angle to the direction of travel, because interlocking units at an angle resist a turning wheel far better than a running bond does.

  6. Heavy edge restraint

    Driveway edges take far more force than patio edges, especially where a wheel clips the edge. Restraint is heavier duty and, where the driveway meets soil or lawn, often a concrete haunch rather than a plastic profile.

  7. Drainage and, where it applies, permeable design

    The surface has to shed water somewhere legitimate, and not into a garage or against a foundation. Permeable paver systems do something different: open joints and an open-graded stone reservoir below let water infiltrate rather than run off, which some municipalities treat favourably in stormwater and coverage rules.

    Watch forPermeable systems sold as a straight swap. They use a different aggregate, a different jointing stone and a different maintenance regime - the joints need periodic cleaning to keep working - and whether they earn you any regulatory credit is genuinely local. Verify it with your municipality before it becomes a reason to buy.

  8. Compaction, joints and the transitions

    The laid field is vibrated, joints are filled and re-filled until they stop taking material, and the transitions are detailed - garage threshold, street apron, any gate, and the junction with a walkway.

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • The budget only stretches if the base is thinned. On a driveway this is not a compromise, it is a countdown. Wheel loads find a shallow base within a few seasons. Reduce the paved area, phase the work, or choose a different surface.
  • Heavy vehicles regularly park or turn on it. An RV, a work truck with equipment, a boat trailer or repeated delivery traffic push this into a design question rather than a product choice. Say so up front and get the base specified for it.
  • You want zero maintenance. Joint sand needs occasional topping up, and permeable systems specifically need their joints cleaned to keep infiltrating. If nothing will ever be maintained, a monolithic surface may suit you better.
  • The driveway is failing because the ground under it is moving. A washed-out area, a poorly backfilled utility trench or a drainage problem will reappear under new pavers. Find the cause first - it is usually cheaper than the driveway.
  • You are counting on permeable paving to satisfy a coverage or stormwater rule you have not checked. How permeable surfaces are treated varies by municipality. Confirm it in writing with your jurisdiction before it becomes the reason for the spend.
  • You are planning a garage conversion, an addition or a sewer replacement. Anything that brings heavy machinery over the driveway should happen first. Pavers can be lifted and relaid, but paying twice for the same square footage is avoidable.

  • Is a geotextile separation layer included over my subgrade? Over clay or soft ground it stops the base migrating into the soil below. Cheap to include, impossible to add later.
  • How is the garage threshold detailed? It has to shed water away from the garage and give the door a clean line to seal to. A vague answer here means water inside eventually.
  • If it ruts in the wheel tracks, what does the warranty do? Rutting is the specific failure mode of an under-built driveway. Check that the warranty addresses it rather than excluding settlement generally.

Manufacturers rate units for pedestrian or vehicular use, and driveway-rated pavers are thicker for a reason - they have to span the bedding layer and resist point loads and turning forces from wheels. Using patio-thickness units on a driveway can crack individual pavers and often voids the manufacturer's warranty. Ask specifically what the unit you are being quoted is rated for.
Because of how wheels load a surface. A car does not just press down - it accelerates, brakes and turns, which applies horizontal and rotational force to individual units. Herringbone units are angled against each other so any single paver is restrained by neighbours on several sides, which resists that far better than a pattern with continuous straight joints running in the direction of travel. It is one of the few places where laying pattern is genuinely a structural specification.
Meaningfully deeper, but the actual number depends on your soil, your climate and what parks on it, so treat any single figure quoted without those inputs with suspicion. What matters more than the number is that the contractor states the depth for your site in writing, builds it in compacted lifts, and addresses soft subgrade rather than covering it. Free-draining soil in a mild climate carrying two cars is a very different case from clay in a hard-freeze climate carrying a work truck.

That is a periodic vacuum or specialist cleaning depending on the system. Ask the installer what the maintenance regime is for the exact product before you buy it.
Sometimes, and it can save demolition, but it depends on the slab being sound, stable and correctly sloped, and on the added height not fouling the garage threshold or the street transition. A slab that has cracked because the ground beneath it moved will keep moving, and the pavers will follow it. Have the existing slab assessed on site rather than assuming either way - this is a decision that has to be made by someone looking at it.
