A paver patio is a field of individual concrete or clay units bedded on a thin sand layer over a compacted aggregate base, with sand swept into the joints and a restraint holding the perimeter. Nothing is glued down. The paving works because each unit is wedged against its neighbours - that is what installers mean by interlock. It is also why a paver patio can be lifted and reset in a way a poured slab never can.

How paver patio installation actually works

  1. Layout, pattern and the cut plan

    The pattern is set before the first paver goes down, because it decides how many cuts there are and where they land. Running bond, herringbone and basketweave do not perform identically - herringbone resists rotation under load better, which is why it turns up on surfaces that take vehicles.

    Watch forA layout that puts thin slivers of cut paver along the most visible edge. A good installer works the pattern outward from a line that makes the cuts fall somewhere you do not look, and uses a border course to absorb them.

  2. Base - built, then checked before it is covered

    The compacted aggregate base is the load-carrying part, and once the sand goes over it nobody can inspect it again. On a paver job the base is also extended past the paving line, because the edge restraint has to sit on something solid.

    Watch forBase that stops exactly at the paving line. It is a small saving that guarantees the edge restraint has nothing to bite into, and the perimeter is where paver patios begin to fail.

  3. The bedding layer - thin, uniform and screeded, never used to level

    A shallow, consistent layer of coarse bedding sand is screeded over the finished base. Its job is to let each paver seat evenly, not to correct dips. The base is what gets you flat.

    Watch forA deep or variable sand layer used to bring a rough base up to level. It compacts unevenly under traffic and you get a wavy patio within a season or two. If you see the crew troweling sand into hollows, that is the tell.

  4. Laying and cutting

    Pavers are placed off the bedding rather than walked onto it, working from a straight edge or a string line so the courses stay true. Cuts are made at the perimeter and around any penetrations, then set.

    Watch forDry cutting with no water and no dust extraction. Cutting concrete and stone produces respirable silica, and a crew that does not manage it is telling you something about their standards generally.

  5. Edge restraint installed into compacted base

    A restraint - plastic, aluminium, concrete haunch or a set border course - is fixed around the entire perimeter and pinned into the extended base. This is what stops the field spreading outward.

    Watch forRestraint spiked into soil or loose fill, or left off the side that faces a lawn "because the turf will hold it". Turf does not hold it. That edge is where the joints open first.

  6. Joint sand and compaction

    Sand is swept into the joints and the whole field is vibrated with a plate compactor over a protective mat, which seats the pavers into the bedding and drives sand down into the joints. It is usually repeated until the joints stop taking sand.

    Watch forA single sweep-and-go with no vibration, or joints that are visibly not full at handover. Half-filled joints mean the pavers are not yet locked to each other, which is the entire structural principle of the surface.

  7. Jointing material choice and activation

    Standard sand, or a polymeric jointing sand that binds when wetted. Polymeric resists washout and weed growth but has to be installed dry, in the right weather, and watered exactly as the manufacturer specifies.

    Watch forPolymeric sand installed on damp pavers or with rain coming. It hazes, stains the surface and sets hard where you did not want it, and removing that is unpleasant work. If the forecast is wrong, the right move is to postpone.

  8. Handover, settling and the first season

    You should be told what joint maintenance the surface needs, whether the product should be sealed at all, and what minor settlement is normal in the first freeze-thaw cycle. Some efflorescence - a white bloom from the concrete itself - is common on new pavers and generally fades.

    Watch forBeing sold a sealer on day one as though it were structural. Sealing is a look-and-stain decision on most paver products, and sealing too early can trap efflorescence under the film.

When paver patio installation is the wrong call

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • You want a completely uniform, seamless surface. Pavers have joints, small colour variation between production batches, and a border where the cuts land. If a monolithic look is the goal, a poured surface is the honest answer - see the paver-versus-concrete comparison rather than fighting the material.
  • Nobody will ever top up the joint sand. Joints lose sand to rain, blowers and sweeping. A paver patio that nobody maintains loses interlock at the edges and grows weeds in the gaps. If that will not happen, choose accordingly.
  • You are paving over a slope you have not retained. Pavers do not hold a bank. If the patio needs a level terrace cut into a grade, the retaining wall is the real project and the paving is the finish on top of it.
  • The quote gets cheap by thinning the base. Pavers are the material most obviously punished by a weak base, because settlement shows as a visible dip in a field of straight lines. Shrink the patio instead.
  • You want the crew to use bedding sand to fix a rough base. Some installers will offer this to save a day. It buys you a flat-looking patio now and a wavy one in two years.
  • You are laying pavers where a vehicle will eventually park. A driveway build is a heavier specification from the subgrade up. Extending a patio-spec surface to take a car is how you get rutting at the wheel tracks.

What to check when hiring for paver patio installation

  • How far past the paving line does the base extend, and what is the edge restraint fixed into? The paver-specific question. Base extended beyond the edge is what makes the restraint work, and the restraint is what preserves interlock.
  • How thick is the bedding layer, and is it screeded to a fixed depth? You want a thin, consistent answer. Anything described as "whatever it takes to level it" means the base is not flat.
  • Will the field be vibrated after the joints are filled, and how many passes? Compacting the laid surface is what seats the pavers and drives sand into the joints. Skipping it is fast, invisible on the day, and undoes the whole system.
  • Plain sand or polymeric, and why for my site? Polymeric costs more and resists washout and weeds, but is fussy about weather and installation. It should be a reasoned choice, not a default upsell.
  • Where do the cuts fall, and can you show me the border detail? The difference between a patio that looks designed and one that looks assembled is almost entirely in the perimeter.
  • Are you wet-cutting, and how are you controlling dust? Silica exposure is a real occupational hazard, and it is also a good proxy for how carefully a crew works generally.
  • If a section settles, what is the process and is it covered? Resettability is the main reason to choose pavers. Make sure the warranty actually reflects it rather than excluding settlement outright.

Interlock is the load-sharing that happens when pavers are wedged tightly against each other with sand filling the joints. Step on one paver and the ones around it help carry the load, which is why a properly locked field behaves almost like a single flexible surface. Lose the joint sand or lose the edge restraint and each paver starts acting alone - which is when you get rocking units, opening joints and edges that creep outward. Almost every paver maintenance task exists to protect interlock.
Not structurally. Sealing is mainly about appearance and stain resistance - it can deepen colour, make spills easier to clean up, and help hold jointing material. It also has to be reapplied periodically, can change the finish in a way not everyone likes, and applying it too soon on new pavers can trap the natural white bloom of efflorescence under the film. Treat it as an optional finish decision and ask the paver manufacturer what they recommend for that specific product.
That is efflorescence - soluble salts within the concrete migrating to the surface as the units dry out, leaving a white haze. It is a normal characteristic of new concrete products rather than a defect or a sign of a bad installation, and it typically weathers off over the first seasons. There are cleaners made for it if you would rather not wait. What you should not do is seal over it immediately, because that locks it in.
Usually, and this is the practical advantage of the material. The affected pavers are lifted, the bedding and often the base beneath them is corrected and recompacted, and the same units go back down. Done well it is invisible. The important part is diagnosing why it settled - a washed-out base, a badly backfilled trench underneath, or water tracking under the paving - because resetting pavers over an unaddressed cause just buys time.
Most joint weeds germinate in organic debris that collects in the joints from above, not from soil below - which is why full, well-maintained joints are the real defence. Keeping the joints topped up, clearing leaf litter, and using a polymeric jointing sand where washout is a problem all reduce it substantially. No paver patio is permanently weed-free, and any installer promising that is overselling.
Both are used successfully in cold climates and the base matters more than the choice. The genuine difference is in how they respond to ground movement: a paver field has thousands of joints that can accommodate small movement and can be reset when it does not, whereas a poured slab is rigid and relieves stress by cracking, usually at a control joint if one has been placed well. Neither is immune, and a free-draining base is the real protection in both cases.
