How pergola installation actually works

  1. Attached, freestanding — or on a deck, which is a different job

    A freestanding pergola stands on its own footings. An attached pergola ledgers to the house, which means fixing into the wall structure and flashing that connection so water cannot get behind it. A pergola on an existing deck is a third case entirely: the deck frame has to carry concentrated post loads and resist uplift, which most decks were not designed to do.

    Watch for: Posts bolted onto deck boards or onto a deck frame nobody has assessed. That is a deck framing question and belongs with a deck builder — the load has to reach the footings, not stop at the joists.

  2. Footings sized for uplift, not just for weight

    The governing load on an open structure is usually wind trying to lift it, so footings are as much about anchorage as about bearing. In freezing climates they also go below frost depth, otherwise the structure moves seasonally and racks out of square.

    Watch for: Posts on surface-mounted brackets set into paving or into shallow blocks. It looks solid, it holds up fine on calm days, and it is the reason pergolas end up on their side in a storm.

  3. Permits, setbacks and HOA approval

    Many jurisdictions permit pergolas above a certain size or when attached to a dwelling, and setbacks from property lines apply. HOAs regulate them frequently, often on appearance and colour as well as siting.

    Watch for: Assuming an open structure is exempt because it has no solid roof. That is true in some places and not in others, and an unpermitted attached structure is a problem when you sell.

  4. Choosing the system — timber, aluminium, vinyl or louvered

    Timber is the traditional look and needs finishing and maintenance. Aluminium systems are lighter to maintain and often come as engineered kits. Louvered pergolas with adjustable or motorised blades are a different product again: they can close to shed rain, which means they also collect load, and the powered ones need an electrical supply.

    Watch for: A louvered system specified without anyone checking what it weighs closed, or in a snow climate, what it holds. Adjustable-roof systems are engineered assemblies and must be installed within their manufacturer's instructions and ratings.

  5. Post setting, squaring and bracing

    Posts are set plumb, square and to a consistent height, and the frame is braced so it resists racking — an open rectangle wants to become a parallelogram under lateral load, and the bracing or the joint design is what stops that.

    Watch for: A structure with no visible bracing strategy and simple butt joints. It may feel firm on the day and develop a lean after a couple of windy seasons.

  6. Beams, rafters and the slats that produce the shade

    The shade you get depends on slat depth, spacing and orientation relative to the sun's path. Deeper slats spaced closely and run in the right direction shade far more than the same material laid the other way.

    Watch for: Slat spacing chosen for looks only. A widely spaced pergola over a dining table gives you a stripy sun pattern and not much relief at midday. If shade is the goal, say so and have the spacing designed for it.

  7. Water, wall connection and drainage

    An open pergola does not shed rain, and that is fine. Anything that does — a louvered roof closed, a canopy, a polycarbonate panel — creates runoff that has to be directed somewhere, and an attached structure needs proper flashing at the wall.

    Watch for: A ledger fixed to the house with sealant instead of flashing. Water gets behind it, and it does its damage inside the wall where you will not see it for years.

  8. Finishing, electrical and handover

    Timber is sealed or stained, hardware is checked, and any lighting, fans or motorised controls are connected by a licensed electrician. You should be told the maintenance cycle for the finish.

    Watch for: Lighting or fans wired by the carpentry crew. Outdoor electrical is licensed work and fans in particular need a fixing rated to carry a moving load.

The failure mode here is wind uplift, and it is sudden. An open frame on inadequate anchorage becomes a large, heavy object moving through a garden. If you take one thing seriously on a DIY pergola, make it the footings and the post connections.

It varies, and the two things that usually trigger one are size and attachment. Many jurisdictions exempt small freestanding structures below a stated footprint but permit anything larger, and attaching a structure to a dwelling frequently requires a permit regardless of size because it becomes part of the building. Setbacks from property lines apply either way, and HOAs regulate pergolas often — sometimes down to colour. Ask your building department and read the covenants before ordering anything.
Less than most people expect from an open slatted structure, and the amount depends on three design variables: how deep the slats are, how closely they are spaced, and which way they run relative to the path of the sun. Deep slats spaced tightly and oriented correctly can give genuinely useful midday shade; shallow slats spaced widely give a decorative stripe pattern and not much relief. If shade rather than definition is the goal, say so at design stage — it changes the specification, and it is easy to get right in advance and expensive to fix after.
Sometimes, but it must be assessed rather than assumed. A pergola concentrates load at four or six points and, more importantly, tries to lift in wind — so those forces have to travel through the deck frame down to footings capable of resisting them. Most decks are designed for uniformly distributed live load, not for point loads and uplift, so reinforcement is common. Have a deck builder look at the framing before you buy a structure, because the answer sometimes changes what you can put up there.
A pergola is an open framework — posts, beams and slats — that filters sunlight and defines an area without enclosing it. A gazebo is a roofed structure, usually with a solid or shingled roof, that keeps rain off and often has a floor and sometimes partial walls or screening. That difference drives everything downstream: a gazebo carries a real roof and in snow country a real snow load, so it needs a more substantial frame and footings, and it is far more likely to need a permit.
They solve a genuine problem, which is that a fixed slatted roof cannot adapt to the weather or the time of day. Adjustable louvres open for light, angle for shade, and close to shed rain. What you are taking on in exchange is an engineered mechanical assembly — moving parts, usually a motor and a control system, and an electrical supply — plus a roof that, when closed, collects water and in some climates snow. In a snow region that becomes a structural design question. Worth it if you will use the adjustability; over-specified if you only ever want shade.
It depends almost entirely on the material and on whether it gets maintained. Aluminium and vinyl systems ask very little of you and hold their appearance. Timber in full sun and rain needs refinishing on a regular cycle, and the point that fails first is nearly always where the post meets the ground or the paving — moisture sits there. A structure with well-detailed post bases and a maintained finish lasts a long time; one where water can sit at the post base does not, regardless of how good the timber was.
