  1. Attached, freestanding - or on a deck, which is a different job

    A freestanding pergola stands on its own footings. An attached pergola ledgers to the house, which means fixing into the wall structure and flashing that connection so water cannot get behind it. A pergola on an existing deck is a third case entirely: the deck frame has to carry concentrated post loads and resist uplift, which most decks were not designed to do.

  2. Footings sized for uplift, not just for weight

    The governing load on an open structure is usually wind trying to lift it, so footings are as much about anchorage as about bearing. In freezing climates they also go below frost depth, otherwise the structure moves seasonally and racks out of square.

  3. Permits, setbacks and HOA approval

  4. Choosing the system - timber, aluminium, vinyl or louvered

    Timber is the traditional look and needs finishing and maintenance. Aluminium systems are lighter to maintain and often come as engineered kits. Louvered pergolas with adjustable or motorised blades are a different product again: they can close to shed rain, which means they also collect load, and the powered ones need an electrical supply.

  5. Post setting, squaring and bracing

    Posts are set plumb, square and to a consistent height, and the frame is braced so it resists racking - an open rectangle wants to become a parallelogram under lateral load, and the bracing or the joint design is what stops that.

  6. Beams, rafters and the slats that produce the shade

    The shade you get depends on slat depth, spacing and orientation relative to the sun's path. Deeper slats spaced closely and run in the right direction shade far more than the same material laid the other way.

    Watch forSlat spacing chosen for looks only. A widely spaced pergola over a dining table gives you a stripy sun pattern and not much relief at midday. If shade is the goal, say so and have the spacing designed for it.

  7. Water, wall connection and drainage

    An open pergola does not shed rain, and that is fine. Anything that does - a louvered roof closed, a canopy, a polycarbonate panel - creates runoff that has to be directed somewhere, and an attached structure needs proper flashing at the wall.

  8. Finishing, electrical and handover

    Timber is sealed or stained, hardware is checked, and any lighting, fans or motorised controls are connected by a licensed electrician. You should be told the maintenance cycle for the finish.

When pergola installation is the wrong call

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • You actually want to stay dry. A slatted pergola gives shade, not shelter. If rain protection is the requirement, you want a solid roof structure or a louvered system that closes - and that is a different product with different loads, a different permit and a different price.
  • The structure is going on an existing deck nobody has assessed. Point loads and uplift have to travel down to footings. This is a deck framing question first and a pergola question second - see the decks side of the site before you buy anything.
  • Your site is exposed and the budget assumes surface-mounted posts. On a windy site the anchorage is the product. Skimp there and the failure is not gradual.
  • You are in a heavy snow region and want a closed or covered roof. Snow load on a closed louvered roof or a panelled top is a real structural design case. It is fine when it is designed for; it is dangerous when it is assumed.
  • You want shade this summer over an area facing the wrong way. Slat orientation and spacing only do so much against a low afternoon sun. Sometimes the honest answer is a shade sail, a retractable awning or a tree.
  • You will not maintain a timber structure. Timber in full sun and rain needs refinishing on a cycle. If that will not happen, an aluminium or vinyl system will look better in five years even if it looks less characterful on day one.

What to check when hiring for pergola installation

  • What are the footings, and how are the posts anchored against uplift? The question the whole structure depends on. You want a specific footing description, not "we set them in concrete".
  • Is a permit required for this size and this attachment, and who pulls it? Attached structures and larger footprints frequently need one. Assuming exemption is how unpermitted structures end up on a disclosure form.
  • If it is attached, how is the ledger flashed? Sealant is not flashing. This connection is the main way an attached structure damages a house, and the damage is hidden.
  • What slat depth, spacing and orientation, and how much shade will that actually give at midday? Shade performance is a design output. Ask for it explicitly rather than being surprised in July.
  • What is the design snow load, if that applies here? Only relevant in some climates, but critical where it is - especially for closed louvered or panelled roofs.
  • Who does the electrical for lights, fans or motors? It is licensed work, and a ceiling fan needs a fixing rated for a moving load rather than a convenient screw.
  • What finishing does this material need, and how often? The maintenance cycle should be part of the buying decision, not a surprise in year three.

It varies, and the two things that usually trigger one are size and attachment. Many jurisdictions exempt small freestanding structures below a stated footprint but permit anything larger, and attaching a structure to a dwelling frequently requires a permit regardless of size because it becomes part of the building. Setbacks from property lines apply either way, and HOAs regulate pergolas often - sometimes down to colour. Ask your building department and read the covenants before ordering anything.
Less than most people expect from an open slatted structure, and the amount depends on three design variables: how deep the slats are, how closely they are spaced, and which way they run relative to the path of the sun. Deep slats spaced tightly and oriented correctly can give genuinely useful midday shade; shallow slats spaced widely give a decorative stripe pattern and not much relief. If shade rather than definition is the goal, say so at design stage - it changes the specification, and it is easy to get right in advance and expensive to fix after.
Sometimes, but it must be assessed rather than assumed. A pergola concentrates load at four or six points and, more importantly, tries to lift in wind - so those forces have to travel through the deck frame down to footings capable of resisting them. Most decks are designed for uniformly distributed live load, not for point loads and uplift, so reinforcement is common. Have a deck builder look at the framing before you buy a structure, because the answer sometimes changes what you can put up there.

What you are taking on in exchange is an engineered mechanical assembly - moving parts, usually a motor and a control system, and an electrical supply - plus a roof that, when closed, collects water and in some climates snow. In a snow region that becomes a structural design question. Worth it if you will use the adjustability; over-specified if you only ever want shade.
It depends almost entirely on the material and on whether it gets maintained. Aluminium and vinyl systems ask very little of you and hold their appearance. Timber in full sun and rain needs refinishing on a regular cycle, and the point that fails first is nearly always where the post meets the ground or the paving - moisture sits there. A structure with well-detailed post bases and a maintained finish lasts a long time; one where water can sit at the post base does not, regardless of how good the timber was.
