HVAC emergencies

A gas smell or a sounding carbon monoxide alarm is a life-safety emergency — leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility, not an HVAC company. A total heating failure in freezing weather or a cooling failure during dangerous heat is an urgent service call. Most other symptoms can wait for a normal appointment, and waiting usually saves you the after-hours premium.

Before you call, run the free checks: thermostat mode and batteries, the breaker, the furnace power switch (it often looks like a light switch nearby), the outdoor disconnect, and the filter. Also check the condensate drain and float switch on cooling systems — a full drain pan will shut a system down deliberately.

If you do need an emergency visit, ask three things on the phone: the after-hours diagnostic fee, whether it's credited toward the repair, and the earliest realistic arrival. Get the answers before you agree to dispatch.

Emergency calls are also when the worst buying decisions get made. If a technician diagnoses a failure and immediately pivots to a replacement quote, it is reasonable to authorize a temporary fix or space heaters and shop the replacement properly in the next few days. Note that refrigerant work legally requires an EPA Section 608 certified technician — verify, even at midnight.

How to choose

Don't buy a whole system at 11pm: Authorize the emergency repair or a temporary measure. Then get three bids on replacement when you can think.
Turn a frozen system off: If the coil or line set is iced, switch to fan-only. Running a frozen system risks the compressor, which is the expensive component.
