How much does a new HVAC system cost in 2026?

Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?

Age and the size of the repair decide it more than the symptom. Carrier puts furnace life at 15-30 years and AC/heat pump life at 15-20. A major repair (compressor, heat exchanger) on a unit past about 70% of expected life is usually money thrown at a countdown; a small part on a younger system is almost always worth fixing. Get the diagnosis in writing, then compare repair cost to a full-replacement bid for the same house.

What is a Manual J load calculation and do I need one?

ACCA Manual J sizes heating and cooling equipment to your actual house - insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage and duct layout - not square footage alone. You need it on any full replacement. Oversized systems short-cycle, dehumidify poorly and wear out faster. Ask to see the calculation output, not just a verbal assurance. A contractor who sizes by reading the old nameplate is guessing.

Cost and pricing

CBS News attributes the rise to tighter federal efficiency standards, the shift to lower-GWP refrigerants raising equipment cost, skilled-labor shortages, and duct or electrical upgrades that surface mid-project. Regional labor rates amplify the spread.

Hiring and quotes

Three written bids for a planned replacement, each on the same defined scope. One is fine for a true emergency repair (no heat in a freeze) - stabilize first, shop the replacement later when you are not cold.
Equipment model numbers and efficiency tier, AHRI matched-system reference when applicable, duct work scope, electrical and line-set work, permit responsibility, thermostat, haul-away, labor warranty term, and the total cash price. A one-line total with no scope is not a quote.
They can, but their diagnosis is not neutral. If a repair visit turns into a replacement pitch, that is the moment to get an independent second opinion before you buy.
Not always - many reputable companies offer free estimates. Watch for the free-inspection-then-condemned-heat-exchanger pattern. A cracked heat exchanger is a real hazard and a common upsell; ask for camera images and a second opinion before replacing.
EPA Section 608 certification is federally required for anyone who services refrigerant-containing equipment. A contractor license is separate and is issued by your state or locality. Check both - license number with the state board, 608 with the company.
Document everything first: photos, written punch list, dates. Most states require you to give the contractor a chance to cure defects before you withhold full payment. Call your state contractor board or a consumer attorney for your jurisdiction - national blogs get this wrong constantly.

The work itself

A straightforward furnace or AC swap is often one day. A full system with duct modifications, electrical upgrades or a fuel switch can take two to four days. Permit inspections can add calendar time even when the labor is finished.
No. Lennox and other manufacturers state existing R-410A systems can continue to be serviced. Supply of that refrigerant is expected to tighten and get more expensive over time, which affects repair economics on older equipment - not a forced replacement mandate.
An AHRI reference number confirms the outdoor unit, indoor coil and furnace (or air handler) were tested together as a system. Mixing unmatched components can void efficiency claims and complicate warranty support. Ask for the AHRI certificate number on any full replacement.
Often yes if ducts are leaky, undersized or old flex. New high-efficiency equipment on leaky ducts wastes the efficiency you just paid for. Ask for a static-pressure and airflow measurement, not just a visual glance.

Problems and emergencies

Most often a dirty filter, a frozen evaporator coil, a failed capacitor, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter and breaker first. Refrigerant is not consumed - if it is low, there is a leak that needs finding, not a seasonal top-off. More on AC not cooling.
The system switching on and off in short bursts. It wastes energy, wears components and often signals a dirty filter, a control fault, a refrigerant issue, or an oversized system. It is worth diagnosing, not ignoring.
Yes - it can leak combustion gases including carbon monoxide into the living space. It is also one of the most common replacement upsells. Ask for camera images and a second opinion before you buy a new furnace.
A gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm: leave and call 911 or the gas utility, not an HVAC company first. No heat in freezing weather and no cooling in dangerous heat are urgent service calls. Most other symptoms can wait for a normal appointment. See HVAC emergency.
Filters, breakers, thermostat batteries, clearing debris from the outdoor unit, and unblocking vents - yes. Refrigerant, gas and electrical internals - no. Refrigerant work legally requires EPA 608 certification.

After the job, warranty and maintenance

Carrier cites 15-30 years for furnaces and 15-20 years for air conditioners and heat pumps. Installation quality, sizing and filter discipline move the outcome more than brand badge alone.
Carrier recommends professional maintenance at least once a year; twice a year is better if you have both heating and cooling equipment. Filters need changing far more often - at least every other month in many homes. See HVAC maintenance.

Sometimes. The value is usually priority scheduling and a repair discount, not the tune-up itself. Read what is included, whether it auto-renews, and whether skipped visits void anything on the manufacturer warranty.
Document with photos the same day, notify the company in writing, and file against their liability insurance if they stall. Ask for proof of insurance before work starts - certificate of insurance naming you as certificate holder is better than a verbal “we’re insured.”

Uncomfortable questions worth asking

No. A commission-paid salesperson inspecting your system is not a neutral party. Treat findings as a starting hypothesis. Verify expensive condemnations (heat exchanger, “ducts are shot,” “refrigerant is banned”) with photos and a second company that does not also sell you the install.
Installation scope, overhead, warranty length, and whether they are discounting equipment to lock financing. Brand badge is a small slice of the bid. Compare labor warranty, Manual J documentation, and duct work before you chase the logo price.
It depends on your contract and state consumer-protection law. Many agreements allow them to keep costs already incurred; some three-day cooling-off rules apply to in-home sales. Read the cancellation clause before you sign, not after.
You are in a weak negotiating position once the old system is gone. Pre-approve change-order rules in the contract: written approval, price cap, and what happens if you refuse. Without that language, “we found more work” is how a $12,000 job becomes $18,000.

Do I need a permit for my HVAC job?

There is no national answer. Equipment replacement, gas piping changes and new electrical circuits commonly need a mechanical or combination permit, but thresholds are set by your city or county. Call your building department with the job description, or ask the contractor to pull it and verify the permit number yourself. More on HVAC permits.

Is there still a federal tax credit for HVAC in 2026?

The IRS states the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) applies to qualifying property placed in service before December 31, 2025. Do not let a salesperson bake a credit into your math without checking the current IRS page or a tax professional - eligibility and deadlines change.

Will my homeowners insurance cover HVAC failure?

Usually not for wear-and-tear or end-of-life failure. Sudden damage from a covered peril (e.g. lightning, certain water events) sometimes is. Coverage is policy-specific - call your insurer with the cause of loss before you authorize work you expect them to reimburse. See HVAC insurance context.

What size system does my house need?

Only a Manual J calculation on your house answers that. Online BTU rules of thumb ignore insulation, windows, orientation and leakage. Any contractor who quotes tonnage from square footage alone is guessing. Insist on the Manual J output for a replacement.
