Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523HVAC coverage usually comes in three separate layers: the manufacturer's parts warranty on the equipment, the installing contractor's labor warranty on the work, and any optional extended service plan sold separately. They have different lengths and different exclusions. Read the manufacturer's own warranty document on their website before signing — do not rely on a salesperson's summary.
Parts and labor are the distinction that catches people out. A parts warranty may cover the failed component while you still pay for the technician's time to diagnose and install it. Ask each bidder to state the labor warranty in writing, in years, on the proposal.
Many manufacturers require you to register the equipment within a set window after installation to receive the full published term. The window and the terms vary by manufacturer and product line, so check the specific document for the equipment you're buying and register it yourself rather than assuming the installer did.
Coverage can also be conditioned on things you control: correct installation, correct sizing, and documented annual maintenance. Keep every service receipt in one folder with the permit and the registration confirmation. If you ever need to make a claim, that folder is your case.
