Indoor air quality systems - what works, what is oversold
Filtration, humidity control and ventilation do measurable things. Several other products on the same price list do considerably less than the brochure implies. This page separates them.
What is air quality system install?
An indoor air quality system is equipment added to your ducted HVAC system to filter, humidify, dehumidify or ventilate - rather than to heat or cool. The interventions with the clearest, most predictable benefit are better filtration and humidity control, and in a tight house, mechanical ventilation. Several products commonly sold alongside them, particularly in-duct UV lamps and ionisers, are marketed far more confidently than the evidence supports.

Work out what problem you are actually solving
The equipment choice follows the complaint. Allergy symptoms indoors point at filtration. Winter static, cracked woodwork and dry throats point at humidity. Summer clamminess and musty smells point at dehumidification. Stale, stuffy air in a well-sealed house points at ventilation. Odours and chemical sensitivity point at source removal first.

Measure before you buy, where you can
A cheap hygrometer tells you whether your humidity is genuinely out of the comfortable band. An inexpensive particulate monitor tells you whether particle levels are actually elevated indoors. Both cost a fraction of the equipment and both can save you buying the wrong thing.

Filtration - sizing the filter to the system, not the marketing
A deep media cabinet filter has far more surface area than a one-inch throwaway, so it captures more without strangling airflow. Higher MERV ratings capture finer particles but add resistance, and your equipment has a maximum static pressure it can work against.

Humidification and dehumidification
Whole-home humidifiers tie into the duct system and add moisture in winter; whole-home dehumidifiers remove it in summer, and are genuinely useful in humid climates where a correctly sized AC still cannot get humidity down on mild days.
Watch forA humidifier installed and then forgotten. They need a seasonal service - pad or panel replacement, drain check - and one left running unmaintained is a maintenance liability rather than a benefit. Ask what the annual upkeep is before you buy.
Ventilation - ERV and HRV
In a tightly built or recently air-sealed house, the honest answer to stale air is bringing fresh air in deliberately rather than filtering the same air repeatedly. An HRV exchanges heat between incoming and outgoing air; an ERV also transfers moisture, which suits humid climates.

Installation and integration
Most of this equipment mounts in the duct near the air handler and needs a plenum opening, wiring, and in the case of humidifiers and dehumidifiers a water supply or a drain. It is usually a half-day job on an accessible system.

When air quality system install is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- You are being sold an in-duct UV lamp for general air purification. UV has established uses in specific settings with controlled dose and exposure time, but air moving past a lamp in a duct spends a fraction of a second in front of it. For coil surface treatment there is a reasonable argument; as a whole-house air purifier the marketing runs a long way ahead of the evidence. Ask what specifically it is expected to change, and how you would know.
- The problem has a source you could remove instead. A damp crawlspace, a bathroom fan venting into the attic, a mouldy carpet, an unsealed attached garage. Filtering the output of an ongoing source is permanent spending on a fixable problem.
- Your ducts leak into an attic or crawlspace. A leaky return draws dusty, unconditioned air straight into the system, and no filter downstream fixes what is being pulled in past it. Seal the ducts first - it is cheaper and it addresses the cause.
- You want an ioniser or ozone-generating device. Ozone is a respiratory irritant, and devices that produce it intentionally are not appropriate for occupied spaces. Some ionisers also generate byproducts. If a product is being sold on the basis that you can smell it working, that is a reason for caution rather than confidence.
- One room is the problem. A single bedroom with an allergy sufferer in it is better served by a well-sized portable HEPA unit than by whole-home equipment costing several times as much and treating rooms nobody complains about.
- Your system already cannot move enough air. If static pressure is at the limit, adding restriction is the wrong direction. Fix the airflow problem, then revisit filtration.

What to check when hiring for air quality system install
- What specific symptom is this equipment intended to fix? Forces the conversation from a product list back to your actual problem. A vague "improves air quality" is not an answer you can evaluate.
- What is my current static pressure, and what will this device add? Anything in the airstream adds resistance. If the system is already near its limit, filtration upgrades make comfort worse, not better.
- What does this need annually, and what does that cost? Humidifier pads, filter media, UV lamp replacement. Ongoing consumable cost is rarely on the quote and sometimes exceeds it over a few years.
- Have my ducts been checked for leakage first? A leaky return undermines everything downstream of it. Sealing is cheaper than most of the equipment on the quote.
- What evidence supports this particular device doing what you are describing? Perfectly fair to ask, especially about UV and ionisation. A good contractor will distinguish confidently between what is well established and what is a manufacturer claim.
- Would a portable unit in one room do the job for less? If the honest answer is yes and they say so anyway, you have found a contractor worth keeping.
