Indoor air quality systems — what works, what is oversold

Filtration, humidity control and ventilation do measurable things. Several other products on the same price list do considerably less than the brochure implies. This page separates them.

What is air quality system install?

An indoor air quality system is equipment added to your ducted HVAC system to filter, humidify, dehumidify or ventilate — rather than to heat or cool. The interventions with the clearest, most predictable benefit are better filtration and humidity control, and in a tight house, mechanical ventilation. Several products commonly sold alongside them, particularly in-duct UV lamps and ionisers, are marketed far more confidently than the evidence supports.

How air quality system install actually works

  1. Work out what problem you are actually solving

    The equipment choice follows the complaint. Allergy symptoms indoors point at filtration. Winter static, cracked woodwork and dry throats point at humidity. Summer clamminess and musty smells point at dehumidification. Stale, stuffy air in a well-sealed house points at ventilation. Odours and chemical sensitivity point at source removal first.

    Watch for: A package quote covering filtration, UV, humidification and ionisation together before anyone has asked what the symptom is. That is a product line being recited, not a problem being diagnosed.

  2. Measure before you buy, where you can

    A cheap hygrometer tells you whether your humidity is genuinely out of the comfortable band. An inexpensive particulate monitor tells you whether particle levels are actually elevated indoors. Both cost a fraction of the equipment and both can save you buying the wrong thing.

    Watch for: Air quality "tests" performed for free by the company selling the remedy. A meter held in a dusty basement will always find something. If you want measurement, measure it yourself over a few weeks or use an independent assessor.

  3. Filtration — sizing the filter to the system, not the marketing

    A deep media cabinet filter has far more surface area than a one-inch throwaway, so it captures more without strangling airflow. Higher MERV ratings capture finer particles but add resistance, and your equipment has a maximum static pressure it can work against.

    Watch for: A high-MERV one-inch filter dropped into the existing slot. Fine filtration in a thin filter is the classic way to starve a system of airflow — you get a frozen coil, a tripped limit switch and higher bills. If you want serious filtration, you need the cabinet, not just the rating.

  4. Humidification and dehumidification

    Whole-home humidifiers tie into the duct system and add moisture in winter; whole-home dehumidifiers remove it in summer, and are genuinely useful in humid climates where a correctly sized AC still cannot get humidity down on mild days.

    Watch for: A humidifier installed and then forgotten. They need a seasonal service — pad or panel replacement, drain check — and one left running unmaintained is a maintenance liability rather than a benefit. Ask what the annual upkeep is before you buy.

  5. Ventilation — ERV and HRV

    In a tightly built or recently air-sealed house, the honest answer to stale air is bringing fresh air in deliberately rather than filtering the same air repeatedly. An HRV exchanges heat between incoming and outgoing air; an ERV also transfers moisture, which suits humid climates.

    Watch for: Ventilation dismissed in favour of a purifier. If the complaint is stuffiness and elevated CO2 in a tight home, no amount of filtration fixes it — filters remove particles, they do not add oxygen or remove carbon dioxide.

  6. Installation and integration

    Most of this equipment mounts in the duct near the air handler and needs a plenum opening, wiring, and in the case of humidifiers and dehumidifiers a water supply or a drain. It is usually a half-day job on an accessible system.

    Watch for: Equipment added without re-checking static pressure afterwards. Every device you put in the airstream adds resistance. Measure before and after; the system has a limit and exceeding it costs you comfort and equipment life.

It depends entirely on what you expect them to do. Mounted to shine on the evaporator coil, UV can help keep the coil surface free of biological growth, which is a real and modest benefit in humid systems. Sold as whole-house air purification, the claim is much weaker: air passes the lamp in a fraction of a second, which is far less exposure than laboratory disinfection assumes. Treat coil treatment as plausible and air disinfection as marketing until someone shows you the dose calculation.
The highest your system can handle without restricting airflow — and that is a property of your equipment and your duct system, not a universal number. A deep media cabinet can carry a higher rating comfortably because it has far more surface area. Putting the same rating into a one-inch slot filter typically starves the system, freezes the coil and raises your bills. If you want better filtration, the correct sequence is measure static pressure, add the cabinet, then raise the rating.
Better filtration can genuinely reduce airborne particulate, and people with dust and pollen sensitivities often notice it. It is not a cure, and it does not address allergens that are not airborne — dust mites in bedding, pet dander settled in carpet, mould growing on a damp surface. The most effective package is usually source control and cleaning first, then a properly sized media filter, then a portable HEPA unit in the bedroom where the most hours are spent.
Buy a hygrometer before you buy either. Comfortable indoor relative humidity generally sits somewhere around the 30 to 50 per cent band, and which direction you need to move depends on your climate and your building. Cold-winter climates typically run dry indoors and benefit from humidification; hot humid climates run damp and often need dehumidification even when the air conditioning is keeping temperature. Measuring for a few weeks in each season costs almost nothing and prevents an expensive guess.
Whole-home equipment treats every room the ducts reach and is invisible and silent in the living space, which is a genuine advantage. A portable HEPA unit treats one room, but treats it with a higher grade of filtration than most ducted systems can tolerate, and only runs where you need it. If the concern is one bedroom, portable is usually better value; if it is a whole house with an occupant sensitive throughout, ducted filtration makes more sense. They are not competitors so much as different scopes.
