That is the part the how-to articles skip, and it is the part that decides whether this works out.
Insulating an existing wall usually means drilling a hole in each stud bay — from inside through the drywall, or outside behind a removed course of siding — and packing loose fill or injecting foam into the cavity, then plugging and finishing the holes. The work is straightforward; the judgement is not. A cavity that was empty and dried freely now holds material, so how that wall handles moisture changes, and that is the question worth answering before anyone drills anything.
Establish what is in the wall now
Infrared scanning, a borescope through a small hole, or simply pulling an outlet cover tells you whether the cavity is empty, partly filled, already dense-packed, or full of something you would rather not disturb. Older houses commonly have partial fill from a previous owner.
Watch for: A quote written without anyone looking inside a single bay. Re-packing a cavity that already has settled material is a different job, and finding out mid-project is how a fixed price becomes a variable one.
Wiring, plumbing and hazard screening
Knob and tube wiring is a fire hazard in contact with insulation and rules the job out until an electrician has dealt with it. Plumbing in an exterior wall changes the freezing risk once the cavity is packed, because the pipe ends up on the cold side of the new insulation.
Watch for: Nobody asking about the wiring vintage in a pre-war house. This is a five-second question at the site visit and a very expensive discovery afterwards.
Deciding the drying direction
An empty cavity dries in both directions. A packed one dries more slowly, and if the wall has a vapour-impermeable layer on both faces, moisture that gets in has nowhere to go. This is why the assembly, the climate and the existing siding all have to be part of the conversation.
Watch for: A contractor who answers a moisture question with an R-value. The two are unrelated, and the R-value is not the risk.
Access — inside or outside
From outside, a course of siding is removed, holes are drilled through the sheathing, and the siding goes back. From inside, holes are drilled through the drywall and later patched and repainted. Which is cheaper depends entirely on what your siding is and how well it comes off.
Watch for: Brittle or aged siding — vinyl in cold weather, fibre cement, anything asbestos-containing. Removal breakage is a real cost and it belongs in the quote, not in a conversation on day two.
One hole per bay — and per section
Every stud bay needs its own access. Fire blocking, headers above windows and cripple studs below them split cavities into separate sections that each need filling. A bay counted from the outside is not always one cavity.
Watch for: A hole count that matches the stud count exactly. Around window and door openings the real number is higher, and the missed sections are precisely the cold spots you were trying to fix.
Filling to density, not to full
Dense-pack cellulose is packed under pressure to a density that resists settling. Injected foams expand to fill. Either way, "the bay took material" is not the same as "the bay is properly filled".
Watch for: Under-packing. It is the defining failure of this job: the fill settles over the first year or two and leaves a cold void along the top of every bay, which is where the heat was going in the first place.
Patch, finish and verify
Holes are plugged, sealed and finished. A post-work infrared scan on a cold day shows unfilled bays and voids as clear temperature differences and is the only practical way to confirm the work from outside.
Watch for: No post-work verification offered. This is work you cannot see, in a place you cannot reach, and infrared is cheap. A contractor confident in their density will happily scan it.
Wall insulation for an existing home is priced per bay or per wall area, with access driving most of the variation — outside access through removed siding usually beats interior drilling and patching. Do not drill into a wall cavity that may contain knob and tube wiring — pre-1930 wiring is a fire hazard in contact with insulation, and you cannot see it before the bit goes through. In a pre-war house, establish the wiring type before anything else. Equally, do not drill exterior walls blind where electrical cable, gas or water lines run; find them first.
Will you inspect inside a cavity before quoting, and how?
Borescope, infrared or an outlet pull. It establishes whether the wall is empty, partly filled or already packed — which is the difference between three different jobs at three different prices.
What is the wiring vintage in this house, and have you confirmed it?
Knob and tube in contact with insulation is a fire hazard, and wall cavities are where it lives. This has to be answered before drilling, not during.
How will this wall dry once it is filled?
The question that separates a building-science contractor from a hole-driller. You are looking for an answer that references your climate and your existing wall layers, not an R-value.
How many holes, and how are you handling window and door openings?
Fire blocking, headers and cripple studs split cavities into sections that each need filling. A hole count equal to the stud count means the sections around openings are being missed.
What density are you packing to?
Under-packing is the defining failure here and it does not show up for a year or two, by which point the drywall is patched and painted.
Will you infrared scan the walls afterwards and show me?
The only practical verification of work you cannot see. It is cheap, and reluctance to do it is informative.
Who patches, and to what standard — inside and out?
Interior plugs need patching, sanding and repainting; exterior access needs the siding re-hung without breakage. Both are commonly left vague and both are visible forever.
