What is countertop replacement?

Countertop replacement is a new worktop fitted to cabinets you intend to keep. It uses the same templating and fabrication process as any install, but the risk sits in what is underneath and around the old top: soft sink bases, out-of-level runs, a backsplash you hoped to keep, and carcasses never designed for the weight of slab stone. Material choice still matters; survivability of the existing kitchen matters more.

Signs you need countertop replacement

• The laminate is swollen at the sink or dishwasher edge and will not dry out
• There is a crack from a cooktop corner or a chip that catches every cloth
• Seams have opened and water is staining the cabinet below
• You want stone or a different surface but the cabinets and layout still work
• The top is scorched, etched or permanently stained and refinishing is not an option for that material
• A previous patch or burn cover is failing and the substrate feels soft underfoot pressure at the rim
• You are mid-refacing or refinishing cabinets and the old top makes the new doors look unfinished

How countertop replacement actually works

   Inspect cabinets and substrate before anyone books a template

   Remove drawers under the sink if needed; probe for soft particleboard, rusted sink clips and mould. A beautiful slab on a failing sink base is a short-lived purchase. Check dishwasher end panels and any previous patch plates at the same time.

   Decide sink and cooktop: reuse, undermount change or full swap

   Top-mount sinks can sometimes be reused; moving to undermount usually means a new sink and a different cut. Cooktop cut-outs are model-specific - confirm the replacement appliance before the slab is cut. Write the sink model and faucet hole count into the fabricator order so deck mounts are not improvisation on fit day.

   Watch forAssuming the old sink drops straight into a new stone top. Edge profiles and reveal standards rarely match by accident.

3. 3

   Plan the backsplash edge you already have

   If tile stays, the new top must meet it cleanly - thickness change shows as a gap or a proud edge. If the splash comes off, schedule wall repair before final silicone. Photograph the rear wall height before removal so paint and tile orders match reality.

   Confirm support for heavier materials

   Older cabinets and long overhangs may need corbels, steel brackets or plywood build-up before stone is safe. Laminate-era kitchens were not all built for slab loads. Seating overhangs and dishwasher openings get special attention because those spans flex first.

5. 5

   Removal day: protect boxes and services

   Old tops come off without racking the runs. Plumbing disconnects for sink swaps should be isolated and capped; electrics for cooktops locked out. Mask finished floors and leave temporary protection on exposed cabinet tops until the new stone lands.

   Watch forDemolition that loosens wall cabinets or twists a run out of level. The template will then freeze a distorted kitchen into stone.

6. 6

   Template from the actual cabinets, then fabricate

   Same discipline as any install: digital or physical template after boxes are stable, seams planned, sink centreline agreed. No changes to cabinet positions after this point. Agree seam locations in writing if the room forces a joint near a sink or cooktop.

   Watch forUsing the old top as the only template when corners have crumbled. You copy the damage into the new slab.

7. 7

   Fit, seal, reconnect and test with water and heat

   Set the top, seam and silicone, remount sink or cooktop, restore supply and waste, check for level at the dishwasher and run water while someone watches below. Leave access under the sink until you have run a full sink of water and a dishwasher cycle without damp paper towels.

   Watch forSigning off before a full sink fill and drain test. Slow leaks at new undermount clips show up after the first real dishwashing.

Replacement pricing follows material, edge profile, sink type and seam count - plus any cabinet repair or support required first. Keeping boxes saves a full remodel, but soft substrate and undermount conversions add lines.
