Inspect cabinets and substrate before anyone books a template

Watch for: Assuming the old sink drops straight into a new stone top. Edge profiles and reveal standards rarely match by accident.
Plan the backsplash edge you already have

If tile stays, the new top must meet it cleanly — thickness change shows as a gap or a proud edge. If the splash comes off, schedule wall repair before final silicone. Photograph the rear wall height before removal so paint and tile orders match reality.

Watch for: A thicker replacement top that leaves a dark band of old adhesive or unpainted wall at the rear. Detail it before fitting day.
Confirm support for heavier materials

Older cabinets and long overhangs may need corbels, steel brackets or plywood build-up before stone is safe. Laminate-era kitchens were not all built for slab loads. Seating overhangs and dishwasher openings get special attention because those spans flex first.

Removal day: protect boxes and services

Old tops come off without racking the runs. Plumbing disconnects for sink swaps should be isolated and capped; electrics for cooktops locked out. Mask finished floors and leave temporary protection on exposed cabinet tops until the new stone lands.

Watch for: Demolition that loosens wall cabinets or twists a run out of level. The template will then freeze a distorted kitchen into stone.
Template from the actual cabinets, then fabricate

Same discipline as any install: digital or physical template after boxes are stable, seams planned, sink centreline agreed. No changes to cabinet positions after this point. Agree seam locations in writing if the room forces a joint near a sink or cooktop.

Watch for: Using the old top as the only template when corners have crumbled. You copy the damage into the new slab.
Fit, seal, reconnect and test with water and heat

Set the top, seam and silicone, remount sink or cooktop, restore supply and waste, check for level at the dishwasher and run water while someone watches below. Leave access under the sink until you have run a full sink of water and a dishwasher cycle without damp paper towels.

Watch for: Signing off before a full sink fill and drain test. Slow leaks at new undermount clips show up after the first real dishwashing.

You plan to replace cabinets within a couple of years. Stone does not transfer cleanly to new boxes. You will pay for two tops or a destructive removal.
There is an active leak you have not fixed. New material on a wet sink base is a scheduled failure. Stop water, dry, repair substrate, then template.
You need a different height or depth for accessibility or appliances. Tops follow the cabinet plane. Changing working height means cabinet work, not just a slab.
The dishwasher opening or end panels cannot support the span. If support cannot be added cleanly, partial cabinet rebuild is part of the job — budget it or change material.

Can I replace countertops without replacing cabinets?
