Kitchen planning is the work you do before anyone is paid to draw or build: listing non-negotiable constraints, setting a budget envelope with contingency, choosing whether the layout may move, and putting decisions in an order that does not loop. It is not the same as kitchen design — design produces drawings and a specification; planning produces the brief those drawings must obey.

Write the non-negotiables before the wish list
Number of cooks at once, seating requirement, accessibility needs, pets, school-morning traffic and whether the room must stay partly usable. These constrain layout harder than tile choices.
Watch for: Starting with finish colours. Colour is easy to change late; aisle width and sink position are not.
Measure the room and the obstacles, not just the walls
Record door swings, radiator or return positions, window sill heights, chimney breasts, and the route from entry to back door if people walk through the kitchen. Note ceiling height and any bulkheads.
Watch for: A single overall width with no appliance wall detail. Most failed DIY plans ignore door arcs and appliance doors.
Decide layout mobility in one sentence
Either: services and walls stay, or specific moves are allowed (sink, range, island, wall). That sentence sets permit exposure, budget shape and who you hire next.
Watch for: Leaving this open "until we see options". Every option set will then include expensive moves you never intended to fund.
Set a budget envelope with three buckets
Visible finishes, services and contingency. Planning fails when the whole number is assigned to cabinets and worktops before electrical and plumbing are considered.
Watch for: A single total copied from an online average. Averages do not know your panel, your floor or your lead times.
Build a temporary kitchen plan on paper
Fridge location, a sink you can reach, heat source, waste bags and dust barriers. Agree it with everyone who cooks before demo is scheduled.
Watch for: Assuming takeaway for six weeks is a plan. Cost and fatigue break projects mid-stream.
Lock decision order: layout → appliances → cabinets → surfaces → light
Each step depends on the one before it. Appliances before cabinets; cabinets before stone; stone before splashback; lighting set out against the cabinet plan.
Watch for: Buying a worktop slab or tile lot because it was on sale before the layout is fixed. You will force the plan around the purchase.
Only then choose the hiring path
Showroom design, independent designer or design-build contractor. Your written brief — constraints, budget buckets, layout mobility sentence — is what you hand them. See design as a service when you need drawings.
Watch for: Walking into a showroom with no brief and accepting the first free plan. Free plans optimise for the product they sell.
Planning itself is mostly your time, or a short paid consult. Money risk appears when planning is skipped and design fees, deposits and long-lead orders lock in a scope you have not stress-tested. Spend early effort on constraints and budget buckets; it is cheaper than redrawing after cabinets are in production.

What do you need from me as a brief before you will draw or quote?
A pro who cannot describe the inputs will invent them. You want a checklist, not vibes.
How do you handle it when my budget envelope and my wish list conflict?
Good planners force a priority cut. Poor ones produce a pretty plan you cannot fund.
Will appliance model numbers be in the plan before cabinets are ordered?
Planning that leaves appliances as "allowance" pushes the hardest dimensional decisions into the expensive phase.
Who owns the measured survey — and is it done before design fees escalate?
Plans drawn from homeowner tape measures are a common source of cabinet disasters.
How are long-lead items identified in the programme?
Cabinets, stone and specialty appliances set the real calendar. A plan without lead times is a mood board with dates.
What decisions must be frozen before demolition?
You need a freeze list. Open decisions after demo are how temporary kitchens become permanent stress.
If I only want planning help, can I buy that without a product commitment?
Separates independent advice from showroom design tied to a cabinet package.
