Mold is seasonal because moisture is. Summer brings high outdoor humidity and cool basement surfaces that condense it; winter brings warm indoor air condensing on cold windows, exterior walls, and attic sheathing. In both cases the EPA target is the same: keep indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent.

Summer. Warm humid air meets cool basement walls and floors and condenses. This is the season for a basement dehumidifier and a hygrometer. Opening basement windows on a humid day makes it worse, not better — you are importing moisture.

Winter. The moisture your household generates has nowhere to go, so it condenses on the coldest surfaces: window glass, poorly insulated exterior corners, and attic roof sheathing. Persistent window condensation is a signal that indoor humidity is too high or ventilation is too low. Running bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans and, if you have one, an HRV or ERV, is the fix.

Spring. Snowmelt and heavy rain test your grading and gutters. This is when basement seepage and crawl-space water show up. Clear gutters, extend downspouts well away from the foundation, and check that soil slopes away from the house.

Fall. Good time for the boring inspection: roof and flashing, attic sheathing for dark staining, exhaust fan terminations, and the seals around windows and doors, before the wet season arrives.

Summer: dehumidify the basement
Target below 60 percent relative humidity, ideally 30–50 percent. Do not ventilate a cool basement with humid outdoor air.
Winter: treat window condensation as a warning
Persistent condensation means indoor humidity is too high for the surface temperatures in your home.
Spring: manage roof and surface water
Gutters, downspout extensions, and grading away from the foundation prevent most basement moisture problems.
Fall: inspect the attic
Dark staining on roof sheathing usually means an exhaust fan venting into the attic or inadequate attic ventilation.
Any season: the 24–48 hour rule holds
Whatever gets wet, dry it inside that window and, per the EPA, mold usually will not grow.
