Roof ventilation - intake is the half everybody forgets

What is roof ventilation?

Roof ventilation moves outside air through the attic - in low at the eaves, out high at the ridge - so that heat and moisture leave rather than accumulating. It only works as a balanced system: exhaust without matching intake pulls conditioned air out of the house instead of drawing fresh air through the attic. The model building codes size it by net free area, typically 1 square foot of vent per 150 square feet of attic floor, reduced to 1:300 where intake and exhaust are properly balanced.

How roof ventilation actually works

  1. Understand what is being ventilated, and why

    An unvented attic in summer becomes an oven that cooks the underside of the roof covering and drives heat into the ceilings below. In winter the problem inverts: warm moist air from the house rises into a cold attic, condenses on the sheathing, wets the insulation and feeds mould. Ventilation addresses both by keeping attic conditions close to outdoor conditions.

    Watch forVentilation discussed only as a summer cooling measure. The winter moisture case does more damage to more roofs, and it is the one that shows up as a "leak" that appears without rain.

  2. Intake at the eaves - soffit vents, and the baffles behind them

    Air enters low, through continuous or individual soffit vents, or through vented drip edge where there is no soffit to work with. Behind each intake, a baffle should hold the insulation clear so the air path into the attic is open.

    Watch forInsulation blown straight over the soffits. This is the single most common ventilation fault in existing houses, it is invisible from outside, and it renders every exhaust vent on the roof useless. It is also cheap to fix.

  3. Exhaust high on the roof - ridge, box, turbine or powered

    Air leaves at or near the ridge. Continuous ridge vent with an external baffle is the usual choice on a roof with a suitable ridge; box vents, turbines or gable vents serve roofs where a continuous ridge is not available.

    Watch forMixing exhaust types on the same attic space - a ridge vent plus gable vents, or a powered fan plus a ridge vent. The higher-capacity opening starts pulling air in through the other one rather than from the soffits, and the attic short-circuits instead of ventilating.

  4. Calculating net free area

    Vents are rated in net free area - the actual open area for air, which is much less than the physical size of the vent because of louvres and screens. You take the attic floor area, apply the required ratio, split the result roughly evenly between intake and exhaust, and select vents whose published NFA adds up.

    Watch forSizing by counting vents rather than by net free area. Two different ridge vents of the same length can differ substantially in NFA per foot, and a vent chosen on appearance can leave you short without anybody noticing.

  5. Balancing - and why intake should never be the smaller half

    Good practice is to have at least as much intake as exhaust, and many roofers deliberately run intake slightly higher. An intake-starved attic converts its exhaust vents into a mechanism for pulling heated, humid air out of your living space through every ceiling gap.

    Watch forMore exhaust added to fix a ventilation problem. If the attic is short on intake, adding exhaust makes the imbalance worse. Diagnose the intake first, every time.

  6. The unvented alternative, where it applies

    Not every roof should be vented. Conditioned attics, cathedral ceilings with no cavity to run air through, and spray-foam assemblies at the roof line are designed as sealed, unvented systems. These are legitimate and code-recognised, and they follow completely different rules.

    Watch forSoffit vents added to a spray-foamed roof deck because a roofer assumed all attics need venting. Introducing outside air into an assembly designed to be sealed causes condensation inside the insulation, and that is a serious and expensive problem.

When roof ventilation is the wrong call

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.
  • Your roof is a sealed, unvented assembly. Spray-foam roof decks, conditioned attics and some cathedral ceilings are designed without ventilation. Adding vents to these is not a neutral improvement - it introduces moist air into an assembly with nowhere to dry.
  • Somebody is proposing more exhaust when the problem is intake. The commonest wrong fix in the trade. More ridge vent on an intake-starved attic pulls harder on your house rather than on the outside air.
  • You are being sold a powered attic fan to fix high energy bills. Powered fans move a lot of air, and in a leaky, intake-starved attic a good share of it comes from the conditioned space below. The efficiency case is contested; passive balance is the safer default.
  • The real problem is air leakage and insulation, not ventilation. Recessed lights, attic hatches and duct penetrations leaking warm moist air into the attic will keep producing condensation no matter how well the roof breathes. Seal and insulate first, then ventilate.
  • You have ice dams and are treating them as a ventilation-only problem. Ventilation is part of the answer. Heat escaping into the attic from below is the other, usually larger, part - and it will not be fixed on the roof.
  • The roof is being replaced next season anyway. Ridge vent and baffles are cheap while the covering is off and awkward while it is on. Roll it into the replacement rather than paying mobilisation twice.

The model codes express it as net free area relative to attic floor area: 1 square foot of ventilation per 150 square feet of attic, which may be reduced to 1 per 300 where the ventilation is balanced - roughly half low intake and half high exhaust, with the intake in the lower portion of the space. Because vents are rated in net free area rather than physical size, the arithmetic has to be done with the manufacturer's published figures rather than by eye.
The attic still moves air, but it takes it from the wrong place. With intake starved, ridge and box vents draw through whatever gaps exist in your ceiling - light fittings, hatches, duct penetrations - pulling heated or cooled air out of your living space and pulling household humidity up into the attic. You get higher energy bills and a moisture problem, from a roof that looks well ventilated from the street.
It is generally advised against on the same attic space. The two exhaust openings compete: air tends to enter at the gable, travel a short distance and leave at the ridge, so the far corners of the attic and the soffit intake stop participating. The usual remedy when adding a ridge vent is to block the gable vents, or to convert them to intake, and a roofer who does not raise the question has probably not thought about it.
It is genuinely contested, and the honest answer is that it depends on how airtight the ceiling below is. A powered fan moves far more air than passive venting, but in a leaky attic with inadequate intake a meaningful share of that air is conditioned air pulled from the house, which the air conditioner then has to replace. On a well-sealed, well-balanced attic the case is better. Passive balance is the lower-risk default, and it costs nothing to run.
It is a well-established mechanism in the trade and in manufacturer warranty conditions. Trapped summer heat accelerates the ageing of asphalt shingles from underneath, and trapped winter moisture wets sheathing and insulation, corrodes fasteners and grows mould. Most shingle manufacturers make adequate ventilation a condition of the warranty - which tells you clearly enough what they believe about the connection.
It helps, and on its own it usually is not enough. Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, which then refreezes at the cold eaves. Ventilation keeps the roof deck closer to outside temperature, which reduces the melting - but the heat has to be stopped at source, with air sealing and insulation at the ceiling plane. Treating it as a roof-surface problem is why people keep having the same winter twice.
