  1. Confirm the roof plane gets enough sun to charge it

The cell is small and it does not need much, but a skylight on a north-facing plane under a mature tree canopy will charge slowly and the battery will be doing more of the work. Any installer should be looking at shading over the actual roof plane, across the seasons, before recommending it.

  2. Decide between a new opening and converting an existing one

Confirm the current position with your own tax adviser and get any claim your installer makes in writing before it changes the decision. Never let a projected credit be the reason.
  • You are replacing a working fixed unit purely to add opening. If the existing skylight is sound, the cost is the whole job - unit, flashing, labour - for one added feature. It is a much better decision to make when the unit is due for replacement anyway.
