A curved rail is designed from measurements of every step, every turn and every obstruction. Some companies use photogrammetry or laser measuring rigs; others measure manually. Either way this visit is a technical exercise, not a sales call.

Watch for: A curved quote given without a full measured survey. Nobody can price a bespoke rail from a photograph, and a number produced that way will move.
Rail design and approval

Once the rail exists, fitting it is comparable to a straight installation — often a single day. The rail mounts to the treads, and structural work is not normally required.

Watch for: Being told at the survey that structural work is needed. That is unusual for a residential stair lift and deserves a second opinion.
Commissioning across the turn

The chair should be run through the full travel repeatedly. On a curved rail the chair changes attitude as it negotiates the bend, and the seat should stay level throughout.

Watch for: A commissioning done only on the straight sections. The turn is where a curved lift feels different, and it is where the user needs to be comfortable.
Handover with the turn practised specifically

The person using it should ride the whole flight several times with the installer present. The sensation on the bend is what people find unfamiliar, and confidence there is what makes the lift usable.
Agreeing service and end-of-life terms up front

The need is urgent. Fabrication takes weeks. For a discharge home next Friday, a curved lift cannot be the answer — a rental, a temporary downstairs arrangement or a straight lift on a different flight is what actually solves that week.
The need is temporary. A curved lift is the least recoverable spend in this whole category. If the requirement may pass within a year or two, renting or a downstairs living arrangement almost certainly costs less overall.
You are hoping to buy a used one. Curved rails are made for one staircase and, as a rule, do not transfer. Reconditioned curved lifts exist but usually involve a new rail with a refurbished chair, which removes most of the saving.
A move is on the horizon. The rail does not come with you and has no resale value. Spending on a bespoke rail for a house you may leave within a couple of years rarely holds up against the alternatives.
Only the top flight is the problem. Sometimes a straight lift on the straight section, plus a handrail improvement at the turn, addresses the real difficulty at a fraction of the cost. Ask whether your staircase allows it.
The staircase is spiral and very tight. Curved lifts can follow spirals, but on a genuinely narrow spiral the seat travel can end up uncomfortable and the clear width for other users very small. Insist on seeing the design before ordering.

Why are curved stair lifts so much more expensive?

Because the rail is not a product, it is a fabrication. A straight rail is a stock extrusion cut to length; a curved rail is designed and manufactured to follow one specific staircase, with the bends, the transitions and the parking positions all made for that house. The chair, the motor and the controls are broadly comparable between the two. Almost the entire difference is the rail.

How long does a curved stair lift take to arrive?

Commonly several weeks between survey and installation, because the rail has to be designed and then built. Some manufacturers promote faster modular systems that shorten this considerably. The installation itself, once the rail exists, is usually a single day. If your timeline is measured in days rather than weeks, this product does not fit the timeline.
