Confirm the staircase is straight

Rental fleets are built on stock straight rails, because those are the ones that can be cut down, refitted and redeployed. A turning staircase generally takes rental off the table.

Watch for: A rental quoted on a staircase with a landing or winders. It is unusual and worth double-checking, because the wait and the price will not resemble a straight rental.
Establish the minimum period and what it includes

Rentals normally carry a minimum term. Ask what is bundled — installation, removal, servicing and any repairs during the term should generally all be inside the monthly figure rather than extra.

Watch for: An attractive monthly rate with installation and removal charged separately. Add all three together before comparing anything.
Installation, on the same timescale as a purchase

A rental lift is a real installed lift, fitted the same way — rail to the treads, plugged into a standard outlet, commissioned and demonstrated. From a fleet, availability can be very quick.

Watch for: Assuming a rental is somehow a lesser machine. It should be a serviced, tested unit, and if it does not look like one, ask when it was last refurbished.
Servicing and breakdowns during the term

On a rental, keeping the lift working is the company's problem rather than yours, and that is a genuine part of the value. Confirm response times in writing.

Watch for: A rental agreement that makes you liable for repairs. That inverts the main advantage of renting and is worth reading the contract for.
Ending the rental and removal

When the need ends, the lift comes out, tread fixings are made good and the staircase is returned to normal. Removal should be included and should be scheduled without difficulty.

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.

The need is permanent and known to be. Past the break-even point rental simply costs more, and the crossover arrives sooner than people assume. Do the division before signing anything.
Your staircase turns. Rental fleets are straight-rail. A curved lift is fabricated for one staircase and does not go back into a fleet, which is why almost nobody rents them.
You need it for years but the budget only allows monthly payments. That is a financing question rather than a rental one, and finance on a purchase will usually be cheaper over the same period. Ask about both.
The minimum term is longer than the need. Renting for six months to cover an eight-week recovery is not the saving it looks like. Compare the minimum term against the realistic timeline.
Repairs are your responsibility under the agreement. A rental where breakdowns fall on the customer has removed the main reason to rent. Read that clause specifically.
Nobody rents in your area. Rental depends on a local fleet and a local engineer. Where neither exists, a reconditioned purchase with a resale plan may get you closer to the same outcome.

When was this unit last refurbished and serviced?

A rental should be a properly reconditioned machine. It is a reasonable question and a good company will answer it easily.

How do I work out whether to rent or buy?
