Water expands when it is heated, and it has to go somewhere. In an old open system it simply pushed back toward the street main. But if there is a check valve, a pressure-reducing valve or a backflow preventer on your incoming supply — increasingly standard, and often installed without anyone mentioning it — that path is closed, and every heating cycle instead raises the pressure inside your own pipes. A thermal expansion tank gives that expansion somewhere to go, using a sealed air cushion behind a rubber diaphragm. It is a small, inexpensive component that protects everything downstream of it.

Establish whether the system is actually closed
The question is whether water can flow backward toward the main. A pressure-reducing valve, a check valve, or a backflow preventer at the meter each closes the system, and homeowners often do not know theirs was fitted — utilities have added them broadly. Confirming this decides whether the tank is required or optional.
Watch for: Being told you do not need one because you never have. Systems become closed retroactively when a utility or a plumber adds a valve at the meter, and nothing announces the change until the relief valve starts dripping.
Measure the static supply pressure
Before fitting anything, the incoming pressure is measured at a hose bib with a gauge, ideally at rest. This number matters twice: it tells you whether pressure itself needs regulating, and it is the figure the expansion tank's air pre-charge has to be set to match.
Watch for: A tank fitted straight out of the box on its factory pre-charge. If that charge does not match your supply pressure, the tank cannot do its job properly — it either sits waterlogged or never accepts expansion at all. This is the most common installation error with this component.
Size and site the tank
Sizing follows the volume of the water heater and the system pressure, so a larger tank pairs with a larger heater. It goes on the cold supply line to the heater, upstream of the inlet, supported independently rather than hanging on the pipe — a water-filled tank is far heavier than an empty one and the connection is not a structural bracket.
Watch for: A tank hanging unsupported from a horizontal copper line. Over time the weight works the joint, and the failure is a leak directly above a water heater, which is the least helpful place in the house for one.
Set the pre-charge, fit and verify
The air side is adjusted at the valve to match the measured supply pressure while the tank is empty of water, then it is fitted and the system repressurised. A quick verification afterwards should show that pressure no longer climbs sharply after a heating cycle.
Watch for: No before-and-after pressure check. Without it, nobody has actually demonstrated that the problem you paid to fix has been fixed.
Label, document and re-check static pressure after a heat cycle
Once the system has run through a heat-up and cool-down, confirm the tank air charge still matches the system static pressure and that the expansion vessel is not waterlogged. Leave the homeowner with the pre-charge target and the shutoff location.
Watch for: Walking away after the first fill without a post-cycle check. A tank that was set cold can behave differently after the first full heat, and that is when short-cycling or relief-valve dribble shows up.

Ask what to feel and listen for. These fail silently and the consequence gets blamed on the relief valve instead.
