Orange stains and rotten-egg smell, diagnosed properly
The stain colour, where it appears, and whether the smell is on the hot tap or both taps will tell you which of four completely different problems you have - and one of them is a water heater repair, not a treatment system.
What is iron and sulfur removal?
Orange or red staining, black specks, and a rotten-egg smell are three different findings with different causes and different fixes. The diagnosis turns on details you can observe yourself: whether the water is discoloured straight from the tap or only after standing, what colour the stain is, whether there is slime in the cistern, and - the one most often missed - whether the smell is on the hot tap only. A hot-only smell usually points at your water heater, not at your well.
Signs you need iron and sulfur removal
- Orange or rust-coloured staining in sinks, baths, toilet cisterns and on white laundry
- Water that comes out clear and turns orange in the glass or in a filled bath after a few minutes
- Water that is already discoloured the moment it leaves the tap
- Black or dark brown specks and staining, often noticed first in the toilet or the dishwasher
- A rotten-egg or sulphurous smell - note carefully whether it is on the hot tap, the cold tap, or both
- Reddish-brown slime or jelly-like build-up inside toilet cisterns, in the pressure tank or on filter housings
- A softener that has gradually stopped softening as well, or that has started to smell
- Coffee and tea tasting metallic, and a bitter edge to water that used to taste fine

How iron and sulfur removal actually works
Run the clear-water test yourself, for free
Draw a glass of cold water and look at it immediately, then again after twenty minutes. Clear at first and orange later means dissolved ferrous iron oxidising in front of you. Discoloured from the start means ferric iron - already-oxidised particles being carried in suspension. Those are two different treatment problems.
Watch forSkipping this and describing it to a salesperson as "rusty water". The distinction changes the equipment, and it takes twenty minutes and no money to establish.
Read the stain colour
Orange and red point to iron. Black, dark brown or grey-black staining points to manganese, which frequently accompanies iron and needs conditions the iron treatment does not automatically provide. Both stain laundry and both etch into fixtures over time.
Watch forBlack staining being treated as an iron problem. Manganese commonly needs a higher pH and different media to be removed reliably, and a system that handles the iron may leave the black staining exactly where it was.
Check whether the smell is on the hot tap only - this is the big one
Run the cold tap and smell it. Then run the hot. If the rotten-egg smell is on the hot side only, the likely source is inside your water heater: the sacrificial anode rod reacting with sulphate-reducing bacteria in the tank. Replacing or changing the anode type, and disinfecting the tank, is a water-heater job at water-heater prices.

Look for iron bacteria, because it changes everything
Reddish-brown slime, jelly or a rainbow sheen inside cisterns, pressure tanks or filter housings indicates iron bacteria rather than simply dissolved iron. These organisms are not a health emergency but they foul equipment enthusiastically and they will not be filtered out.

Confirm the picture with a laboratory result
Your own observations narrow it down; a certified result tells the designer what form the iron is in, whether manganese is present, what the pH is, and whether there is sulphide. pH matters enormously here because most oxidising media only work well within a band. Match a treatment approach to the diagnosis
Air injection and oxidising filter media suit moderate dissolved iron and sulphide by converting them to filterable particles. Chemical injection ahead of a contact tank and filter handles heavier loads, difficult pH, or bacteria, at the cost of a chemical to keep topped up. A softener alone handles only limited ferrous iron and is not an iron treatment.

Sequence it ahead of everything it protects
Iron and sulphur treatment sits early - after sediment, before the softener, well before any UV. Oxidation-based systems also need contact time, which means the physical layout and the flow rate are part of whether the system works, not just details.
Watch forAn iron filter fitted downstream of the softener because that is where the space was. The resin then takes the full iron load, and the system fails in a way that looks like a softener fault.
Plan the backwash and the ongoing service
These filters backwash, sometimes vigorously, and iron-laden discharge stains what it lands on. Media beds need periodic regeneration or replacement depending on type, and chemical systems need solution kept topped up and the injector kept clear.

When iron and sulfur removal is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- The rotten-egg smell is on the hot tap only. Check both taps before you sign anything. A hot-only smell is most often the water heater's anode rod and the bacteria living in the tank, and it is fixed by an anode change and tank disinfection. Buying whole-house sulphur removal for this is the most expensive way to solve it and it may not even work.
- The staining is only in one fixture. Whole-house iron is whole-house. A single stained sink is more likely a corroding fitting, a failing supply line, or an appliance shedding into that one outlet. Look locally before treating the entire building.
- You have iron bacteria and no disinfection plan. Filtration in front of an untreated iron bacteria problem gives the organisms a bigger, warmer, more nutritious home. The well and the plumbing have to be shocked first, and it needs to be a repeating maintenance plan, not a one-off purchase.
- Nobody has measured your pH. Most oxidising media only perform within a pH band, and manganese in particular is unforgiving about it. A system specified without that number is a coin toss dressed up as engineering.
- The orange only appeared after work on the mains or the well. Disturbed sediment and dislodged scale produce dramatic short-term discolouration that clears on its own. Flush thoroughly, wait, and re-test before concluding you have a permanent problem.
- Your plumbing is old galvanised pipe. Then some of the rust is coming from inside your own pipes, downstream of any treatment you install. A filter at the point of entry cannot fix corrosion happening after it, and the honest answer may be repiping.

What to check when hiring for iron and sulfur removal
- Did you check whether the smell is on the hot tap, the cold tap, or both? If they did not ask, they have not diagnosed. A hot-only smell has a cheap answer that is not on their price list.
- Is my iron ferric or ferrous, and what is my pH? These two figures determine whether the proposed media can work. Without them the specification is a guess.
- Is manganese present, and does this design address it as well as the iron? Manganese usually needs different conditions. A system that clears the orange and leaves the black staining is a half-solved problem you paid full price for.
- Have you looked for iron bacteria, and what is the plan if it is there? Filtration alone makes it worse. The answer should involve disinfection at the well and a repeating schedule, not just a tank in the basement.
- Where does this sit relative to the softener and any UV? Ahead of both. If the answer is anything else, the sequence is wrong and the resin will pay for it.
- What contact time and flow rate does this need, and does my system provide it? Oxidation is not instant. Push water through faster than the design allows and it passes untreated regardless of what is in the tank.
- Where is the backwash going, and what does iron-laden discharge do to that surface? It stains permanently and it is often not an acceptable discharge point. Sort it before install day.
