Orange or red staining, black specks, and a rotten-egg smell are three different findings with different causes and different fixes. The diagnosis turns on details you can observe yourself: whether the water is discoloured straight from the tap or only after standing, what colour the stain is, whether there is slime in the cistern, and — the one most often missed — whether the smell is on the hot tap only. A hot-only smell usually points at your water heater, not at your well.

The job

How iron and sulfur removal actually works

  1. Run the clear-water test yourself, for free

    Draw a glass of cold water and look at it immediately, then again after twenty minutes. Clear at first and orange later means dissolved ferrous iron oxidising in front of you. Discoloured from the start means ferric iron — already-oxidised particles being carried in suspension. Those are two different treatment problems.

    Watch for: Skipping this and describing it to a salesperson as "rusty water". The distinction changes the equipment, and it takes twenty minutes and no money to establish.

  2. Read the stain colour

    Orange and red point to iron. Black, dark brown or grey-black staining points to manganese, which frequently accompanies iron and needs conditions the iron treatment does not automatically provide. Both stain laundry and both etch into fixtures over time.

    Watch for: Black staining being treated as an iron problem. Manganese commonly needs a higher pH and different media to be removed reliably, and a system that handles the iron may leave the black staining exactly where it was.

  3. Check whether the smell is on the hot tap only — this is the big one

    Run the cold tap and smell it. Then run the hot. If the rotten-egg smell is on the hot side only, the likely source is inside your water heater: the sacrificial anode rod reacting with sulphate-reducing bacteria in the tank. Replacing or changing the anode type, and disinfecting the tank, is a water-heater job at water-heater prices.

    Watch for: Being quoted a whole-house sulphur removal system for a hot-only smell. No treatment company will lead with the anode explanation, because there is nothing in it for them. Check the taps before you take the meeting — it costs you thirty seconds.

  4. Look for iron bacteria, because it changes everything

    Reddish-brown slime, jelly or a rainbow sheen inside cisterns, pressure tanks or filter housings indicates iron bacteria rather than simply dissolved iron. These organisms are not a health emergency but they foul equipment enthusiastically and they will not be filtered out.

    Watch for: Installing filtration in front of an iron bacteria problem. The media and the softener resin become the bacteria's new home. Iron bacteria has to be dealt with by disinfection and shock treatment first, and it tends to come back — see well water treatment for the well-side work.

  5. Confirm the picture with a laboratory result

    Your own observations narrow it down; a certified result tells the designer what form the iron is in, whether manganese is present, what the pH is, and whether there is sulphide. pH matters enormously here because most oxidising media only work well within a band.     Watch for: Designing without a pH figure. It is the parameter that quietly decides whether the chosen media will work at all, and it is easy to leave off a cheap panel.

  6. Match a treatment approach to the diagnosis

    Air injection and oxidising filter media suit moderate dissolved iron and sulphide by converting them to filterable particles. Chemical injection ahead of a contact tank and filter handles heavier loads, difficult pH, or bacteria, at the cost of a chemical to keep topped up. A softener alone handles only limited ferrous iron and is not an iron treatment.

    Watch for: A softener sold as the iron solution. It removes a modest amount of dissolved iron incidentally, and it fouls in the process. On anything beyond light iron this is a decision that costs you the resin as well as leaving the problem.

  7. Sequence it ahead of everything it protects

    Iron and sulphur treatment sits early — after sediment, before the softener, well before any UV. Oxidation-based systems also need contact time, which means the physical layout and the flow rate are part of whether the system works, not just details.

    Watch for: An iron filter fitted downstream of the softener because that is where the space was. The resin then takes the full iron load, and the system fails in a way that looks like a softener fault.

  8. Plan the backwash and the ongoing service

    These filters backwash, sometimes vigorously, and iron-laden discharge stains what it lands on. Media beds need periodic regeneration or replacement depending on type, and chemical systems need solution kept topped up and the injector kept clear.

    Watch for: Backwash discharged onto a driveway, a lawn or into a stormwater drain. It stains permanently, and in many places it is not an acceptable discharge.

Iron and sulphur systems commonly run from around a thousand dollars for a single air-injection or oxidising media filter to several thousand for chemical injection with a contact tank on difficult water. Ongoing costs are media replacement and, on chemical systems, solution. A water-heater anode fix, where that is the real cause, is far cheaper.

Changing the anode to a different type and disinfecting the tank usually resolves it, and it is a water-heater job. If both taps smell, the source is upstream and treatment is the right conversation.
Ferrous iron is dissolved and invisible — the water looks clear from the tap and turns orange as it oxidises in the glass. Ferric iron has already oxidised into particles, so the water is discoloured immediately. Ferrous needs oxidising before it can be filtered; ferric can be filtered as it is. You can tell them apart at home with a glass of water and twenty minutes.
A limited amount of dissolved ferrous iron, incidentally, and at a cost. Iron fouls the resin, capacity falls, and eventually the unit smells and stops softening properly. On anything beyond light iron, treating it before the softener is not an upsell — it is what keeps the softener alive.
Naturally occurring organisms that metabolise iron and leave reddish-brown slime in cisterns, tanks and filter housings. They are generally regarded as a nuisance rather than a health hazard, but confirm that with your health department for your situation. What they definitely do is foul treatment equipment fast, and they need disinfection and a maintenance routine rather than filtration.
On fixtures and laundry, iron-specific stain removers work far better than general cleaners, and chlorine bleach makes iron staining worse rather than better — a genuinely counter-intuitive point that ruins a lot of laundry. Fix the water first, though, or you will be doing it repeatedly.
Iron and sulphur are whole-house problems by nature, because the staining happens in your laundry, your bathrooms and your appliances rather than in your glass. This is one of the clearer cases for point-of-entry treatment — unlike a drinking-water contaminant, you cannot solve it at one tap.
