How well water treatment actually works

  1. Test at a certified laboratory before anything else

    On a well this is not the sensible first step, it is the only possible first step — there is no utility report to fall back on and no one else looking. Ask your county health department which panel suits your geology; local knowledge about what is common in your aquifer is genuinely valuable and free. Our testing page covers the mechanics.

    Watch for: A treatment proposal built entirely on an on-site test by the company quoting. On municipal water that is a mild concern; on a well, where the range of possible problems is enormous and each one implies different equipment, it is a serious one.

  2. Inspect the well itself before you buy anything

    A cracked or loose cap, a missing sanitary seal, a casing that terminates below grade, or surface water pooling around the head are all routes for contamination straight into the well. These are construction faults, and fixing one can resolve a problem that a treatment system would only have masked.

    Watch for: A bacteria result being treated as a permanent water-quality condition requiring permanent equipment, when it is actually a compromised cap letting surface water in. This is the most expensive diagnostic error made on private wells.

  3. Shock chlorinate and re-test where bacteria is the finding

    Disinfecting the well and plumbing, then flushing thoroughly and re-testing after the system has settled, distinguishes a one-off contamination event from a persistent problem. Follow your health department's procedure — they publish one — and re-test on their timing, not immediately.

    Watch for: A single shock treatment being sold as a permanent solution. If bacteria returns after a properly executed shock and flush, something is letting it in continuously, and that is a well-construction or aquifer question rather than a stronger-chemical question.

  4. Group the findings into what the system has to do

    Well results tend to cluster into a handful of jobs: particulate removal, oxidation and filtration of metals and sulphur, hardness removal, pH correction where the water is corrosive, disinfection, and point-of-use polishing for specific contaminants. Each job is a stage.

    Watch for: A proposal that skips straight to equipment models. The stages should be named in terms of what they are for, mapped to lines on your result, before anybody names a product.

  5. Sequence the train — this is where designs succeed or fail

    Sediment first. pH correction where needed before anything that depends on it. Oxidation and iron or sulphur removal before the softener, so the resin is protected. Softening after. Disinfection last, because a UV lamp needs water the earlier stages have already made clear. Point-of-use polishing at the tap, at the end.

    Watch for: Correct components in the wrong order. It is entirely possible to buy every right box and still have a system that fails, because a softener fed raw iron fouls, and a UV lamp fed turbid water is shadowed. Ask to see the sequence drawn out.

  6. Check the pressure tank and pump can carry the load

    Every stage costs pressure, and a well system starts from whatever the pressure switch cut-in provides, not from constant municipal pressure. Backwashing stages also draw significant flow when they cycle, which the pump has to supply on top of household demand.

    Watch for: A multi-stage train designed with no reference to the pressure switch settings or pump capacity. The symptom is showers that die when a filter backwashes, and it is discovered after the invoice.

  7. Provide for backwash discharge and power at the well house

    Backwashing filters and softeners need somewhere legitimate to send discharge, and discharge volumes on a well train can be substantial. Where a septic field is the only option, that is a conversation to have with your health department before the equipment is ordered.

    Watch for: Backwash routed casually onto the ground or into a field drain. Iron-laden and brine discharge is not neutral, and both local rules and your neighbours may have views.

  8. Verify by independent test, then set a re-testing schedule

    Post-installation testing at a certified lab is the proof the design worked, line by line against the original result. After that, wells need routine re-testing on the schedule your health department recommends for your area, plus a test any time the water changes.

    Watch for: A handover with no verification test. On a well, without a lab result confirming the train did its job, you have bought equipment and hope in equal measure.
