How water conditioner installation actually works

  1. Understand what changes and what does not

    Every salt-free device leaves your hardness number where it was. That is not a criticism — it is the design. What varies is the mechanism by which the device claims to stop those minerals depositing as hard scale downstream.

    Watch for: Any claim of "removal", "reduction of hardness" or "softening". Those words describe ion exchange. A device that removes nothing cannot honestly use them, and the ones that do are telling you how the rest of the sales conversation will go.

  2. Separate the technologies, because they are not equally supported

    Template-assisted crystallisation passes water over a specially prepared media that provides sites for hardness to nucleate into microscopic crystals held in suspension. Electrically or magnetically induced devices claim a similar outcome by applying a field to flowing water without contacting it chemically.

    Watch for: Lumping them together as "salt-free". The physical plausibility and the quality of independent evaluation differ sharply between them — media-contact approaches have substantially more credible support than field-based descalers, which sit at the weakest end and have been contested for decades.

  3. Match the device to the problem you actually have

    Scale in a water heater is a conditioner-shaped problem. Soap not lathering, spotty glassware, stiff towels and grey laundry are hardness-in-the-water problems, and a conditioner will not move them.

    Watch for: Buying to solve the laundry complaint. This is the most common disappointment in the category, and it is entirely predictable from what the device does.

  4. Check the installation constraints, which are real

    Media-based conditioners want a specific contact time, which means flow rate matters and there is usually a minimum straight run of pipe before and after. Many need a sediment pre-filter, because fines will blind the media. Most need no drain and no power at all — that is the category's genuine advantage.

    Watch for: A unit sized on house square footage rather than on peak flow. Push more water through than the contact time allows and the mechanism, whatever you believe about it, has not had a chance to act.

  5. Agree in advance how you will judge whether it worked

    This is the hard part, and it is why the category attracts bad actors. A hardness test cannot verify a conditioner, because hardness is supposed to be unchanged. Realistic evidence is longitudinal: less crust to descale off the shower head and the kettle, less deposit on heating elements over a year or two.

    Watch for: A demonstration presented as proof. Fizzing, colour changes and side-by-side beaker theatre are sales props. So, incidentally, is showing you the hardness reading is unchanged and calling that a good sign without explaining why it is unchanged.

  6. Read the maintenance schedule before you accept "maintenance-free"

    Field-based devices genuinely have almost nothing to service. Media-based units have media with a service life and usually a sediment pre-filter with a much shorter one, so the true running cost is cartridges and eventual media replacement rather than salt.

    Watch for: "No maintenance" claims on a unit that has a replaceable media cartridge in the specification sheet. Ask what the media costs and how often it is changed before you compare the running cost against salt.
