  1. Understand what changes and what does not

    Every salt-free device leaves your hardness number where it was. That is not a criticism - it is the design. What varies is the mechanism by which the device claims to stop those minerals depositing as hard scale downstream.

  2. Separate the technologies, because they are not equally supported

    Template-assisted crystallisation passes water over a specially prepared media that provides sites for hardness to nucleate into microscopic crystals held in suspension. Electrically or magnetically induced devices claim a similar outcome by applying a field to flowing water without contacting it chemically.

  3. Match the device to the problem you actually have

    Scale in a water heater is a conditioner-shaped problem. Soap not lathering, spotty glassware, stiff towels and grey laundry are hardness-in-the-water problems, and a conditioner will not move them.

  • Nobody has quantified your problem. If you do not know your hardness, you do not know whether you have a scale problem worth preventing. Get a neutral test and you may find the honest answer is that you need neither device.

  • What is your returns policy if I am unhappy with the result? Because the outcome here is genuinely harder to verify than with a softener, the return terms are doing more work than usual.
