Carpet installation, where the pad decides the outcome

Carpet is sold on fibre and colour. It wears out because of the pad underneath it and how tightly it was stretched - the two things nobody puts in the showroom display.

In short

What is carpet installation?

Carpet installation means fitting tack strip around the room perimeter, laying and taping pad, then stretching carpet over the strip and trimming it in. In a typical home it is a one-day job per floor. Two decisions made before installation day govern how it ages: the density of the pad, and whether the installer power-stretches the carpet or simply kicks it into place.

Triggers

Signs you need carpet installation

  • The existing carpet has visible traffic lanes that shampooing no longer lifts
  • You can see ripples or waves across the floor - the carpet has come loose from its stretch
  • The pad has flattened underfoot and the floor feels hard where it used to feel soft
  • Odour persists after professional cleaning, which usually means it is in the pad, not the carpet
  • Seams have opened or frayed, particularly in a hallway or doorway
  • You want warmth and sound absorption in bedrooms or a media room that hard flooring cannot give
  • You are preparing a rental or a sale and carpet is the fastest visible improvement per dollar

The job

How carpet installation actually works

  1. Measuring and seam planning

Carpet comes in fixed-width rolls, so the measure is really a plan for where seams will fall and which way the pile will run. Pile direction must be consistent through the whole job or adjoining areas read as different colours.

Watch forA measure that produces a seam across a doorway or down the middle of the main sightline. Seam placement is a choice, and a good measurer moves them into low-traffic, low-light positions before quoting.

  2. Removal, disposal and subfloor check

Old carpet, pad, staples and tack strip come up. The exposed subfloor is checked for squeaks, protruding fasteners, and any moisture or pet damage that has soaked through.

Watch forNobody looking at the subfloor while it is exposed. This is the only day in the next decade you can screw down a squeak for free. Ask for it.

  3. Tack strip and pad

Fresh tack strip is fastened around the perimeter at a set distance from the wall, and pad is laid, butted, taped at the seams and stapled or glued down. Pad seams are deliberately offset from carpet seams.

Watch forThe cheapest pad in the range, quoted by thickness alone. Density is what resists compression; a thick, low-density pad feels luxurious in the showroom and is flat within a couple of years, taking the carpet backing with it.

  4. Seaming

Carpet edges are trimmed straight, seam tape is laid underneath and heat-activated with an iron, and the two edges are pressed together while the adhesive is live.

Watch forSeams that are visible as a ridge or a line of different colour. A well-made seam in the right place is close to invisible; one made in a hurry never improves and is the first thing to fail.

  5. Power stretching

A power stretcher braces against one wall and pulls the carpet tight across the room before it is hooked onto the tack strip on the far side. This tension is what stops the carpet loosening under traffic.

Watch forOnly a knee kicker in the van. Knee kickers position and finish; they cannot generate the tension a room needs. Carpet set without power stretching develops ripples, and re-stretching later is a paid call-out for a defect that was installed.

  6. Trimming, tucking and transitions

Excess is trimmed along the wall and tucked into the gully between tack strip and baseboard. At doorways and where carpet meets hard flooring, a transition or binder bar is fitted.

Watch forLoose or gapping edges at the wall, and transitions that are proud enough to catch a toe. Both are finishing-quality issues you can see on the day, so walk the perimeter before the crew leaves.

Money

What does carpet installation cost?

Carpet is usually the least expensive floor per square foot installed, and pad grade is the biggest controllable variable in the quote. Furniture moving, old carpet disposal and stair work are commonly separate line items rather than included. See the Cost Guide.

Straight answer

When carpet installation is the wrong call

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • Someone in the household has significant dust or allergen problems. Carpet holds what settles into it and releases some of it when walked on. Hard flooring plus washable rugs is the option worth pricing before committing.
  • The room is a basement with any moisture history. Carpet and pad over a slab that occasionally gets damp is how you get a mould problem you cannot see. If it has ever been wet, choose a material that can get wet again.
  • You have a pet with recurring accidents. Urine passes through carpet into the pad and often into the subfloor. Replacing carpet without addressing the pad and sealing the subfloor reinstalls the smell within weeks.
  • It is a kitchen, bathroom, laundry or entry. These rooms get liquid on the floor as a matter of routine. Carpet in them is a maintenance problem that starts immediately and never improves.
  • You are covering hardwood you would rather have. Original wood under carpet is common and frequently worth refinishing for a similar spend. Pull a corner up and look before you order carpet over it.
  • The quote does not include power stretching. This is not really a "wrong service" condition - it is a wrong installer condition. Carpet installed without proper tension is a repair scheduled two years out, and it is worth walking away from.

Before you sign

What to check when hiring for carpet installation

  • Do you power stretch, and is it included in this price? The single most important question on a carpet quote. Ripples in year two are a stretching failure, and re-stretching is not free.
  • What pad density are you quoting, not just what thickness? Density resists compression; thickness alone does not. Two pads of the same thickness can have very different service lives.
  • Where will the seams fall, and can I see that on the measure? Seam placement is a planning decision. Seeing it before installation day is the only time you can influence it.
  • Is old carpet and pad removal and disposal included? A very common exclusion in low headline prices, and disposal of a whole house of carpet is genuinely bulky.
  • Who moves the furniture, and what is excluded? Beds and sofas are usually fine; pianos, aquariums and anything requiring disconnection usually are not.
  • Are stairs priced separately, and per step or per area? Stairs are slow, skilled work and are almost always their own line. Get the method of pricing, not just a number.
  • Will you check the subfloor for squeaks while it is exposed? A free fix on the one day it is accessible. Most installers will do it if asked and will not if not.

FAQ

Carpet Installation - questions people ask

Still have a question? Talk to our team →

A power stretcher braces against one wall and applies tension across the room before the carpet is secured, so the carpet is under proper tension across its whole width. A knee kicker cannot generate that force. Carpet installed without it develops ripples and waves as traffic works it loose, and fixing that later means moving furniture and paying for a re-stretch.
Ask about density, not just thickness. Density is what determines how well the pad resists being crushed under traffic, and a crushed pad lets the carpet backing flex until it breaks down. Very thick low-density pad is a common upsell that feels good in the store and underperforms a thinner, denser pad on the floor.
Usually a single day for a typical floor of a house, sometimes two if there are many rooms, stairs, or a lot of furniture to move. The room is usable immediately - there is no cure time. What extends it is subfloor repair discovered after tear-out, which is a good reason to have the tear-out and the installation on separate days if the schedule allows.
It should not be. The old carpet and pad hold dirt and moisture, the doubled thickness makes the tack strip too low to hold properly, and the assembly is unstable underfoot. It also means nobody sees the subfloor. Any installer proposing it is saving themselves the tear-out, not saving you money.
New carpet and pad off-gas for a period after installation, and the smell is normally strongest in the first days and fades. Ventilating the space well during and after installation helps considerably. If low-emission materials matter to you medically, ask for products with third-party emissions certification and check the documentation rather than relying on a verbal claim.
Usually yes. If the carpet itself is not worn out, an installer can re-stretch it - the furniture comes out, the carpet is released from the tack strip, power stretched properly and re-hooked. It is far cheaper than replacement. If the ripples appeared soon after a new installation, take it up with whoever installed it before you pay anyone else.
