Stone floor installation is the setting of natural stone tiles or modules in a bonded mortar system over a substrate stiff enough for stone’s brittle nature. Unlike a printed ceramic, each piece varies in thickness, veining and porosity, so sorting, lippage control, joint planning and sealing are part of the craft — not optional extras. The install fails when the structure flexes, when joints are starved of mortar, when movement joints are omitted, or when sealing is treated as an afterthought. Structural and substrate verification
Joist stiffness, concrete soundness and underlayment choice must meet stone’s deflection sensitivity. Soft floors crack rigid stone regardless of mortar brand. Framed floors may need sistered joists, thicker sheathing or a mortar bed system; slabs need soundness checks and crack isolation strategies where appropriate. This step is engineering judgement, not only "is the floor flat enough to tile."
Watch for: Stone specified over a bouncy framed floor with no stiffening plan. That crack is already scheduled — usually through the prettiest piece in the room.
Stone selection, batching and dry layout
Pieces are blended from crates so colour and veining distribute. Warped, bowed or out-of-tolerance modules are culled before mortar hits the floor. Book-matching, pattern layouts and large modules need dry layout on the floor so you approve blend and direction before anything is permanent. Natural stone is a geologic product; crate-by-crate install without blending creates blotchy continents of colour.
Watch for: Working straight through one crate at a time. You will get stripes and clusters of veining that look accidental rather than designed.
Mortar bed strategy and coverage
Appropriate thinset or medium-bed methods achieve full support under the stone. Large and irregular modules often need medium bed or carefully back-buttered thinset to avoid hollow corners. Coverage standards exist for a reason: hollow spots sound fine on day one and crack under a chair leg or dropped skillet later.
Watch for: Spot-bonding large stone to save time. Lippage and breakage follow, and hollow tile is a warranty argument you will lose if coverage was never there.
Lippage control on natural thickness variation
Levelling clips, careful back-buttering, realistic joint widths and selective grinding of high edges manage the fact that stone is not a calibrated porcelain. Polished and large modules catch light at edges; what looks minor on a matte sample becomes a toe-stub on a honed hallway. Joint width is a tool for lippage control, not only an aesthetic preference.
Watch for: Hairline joints forced on uneven natural modules. Pride of tight joints becomes trip edges and change orders.
Movement joints at changes of plane and large fields
Soft joints appear where the building moves — perimeters, doorways, long runs, over control joints in slabs — so the stone is not asked to be the expansion joint. Joint layout should be drawn on the plan for large rooms and sunny exposures. Thermal movement on radiant floors makes this more important, not less.
Watch for: Hard grout locked tight to all walls on a big sunny room. Something will crack; make it the designed joint, not a random stone.
Grout, clean and seal to the stone’s porosity
Grout systems suit the stone colour, joint size and expected staining. Impregnating sealers are chosen for porosity and room use — kitchen marble differs from foyer slate and dense granite. Sealing is scheduled around cure times; some stones need pre-grout sealing to prevent pigment staining. Maintenance cycles are part of the install conversation, not a pamphlet left on the counter.
Watch for: One sealer speech for marble and dense granite alike. Porosity differs; so does the maintenance story and the etch risk from acids.
Wet-area waterproofing when stone is in showers or wet rooms
Stone in wet areas needs a membrane and detailing strategy under the finish — stone is the surface, not the waterproofing. Slope, drains and penetrations follow wet-room practice. Skipping membrane because "stone is natural and durable" is how ceilings below get stained.
Watch for: Stone set on wet-area floors without a waterproofing plan. Durability of the rock does not stop water through joints and cracks.
Cure, protection and care handoff
Light traffic waits on mortar cure; heavy furniture waits longer. Temporary protection during other trades prevents scratches on polished stone. You should leave with cleaner chemistry that will not etch calcareous stone, a reseal interval and felt-glide habits for heavy pieces.
Watch for: Vinegar-based "natural" cleaners recommended casually on marble or limestone. Acid etches are permanent dull spots, not dirt.

Large-format stone is heavy, brittle and unforgiving. Dropped corners are expensive; incorrect cuts waste slabs you cannot colour-match easily. Dust from cutting stone needs control. This is a poor first tile project and a dangerous DIY for upper-body strain and silica exposure without proper equipment.
