How outdoor fireplace installation actually works

  1. Design, permit and - commonly - an engineered footing detail

    Outdoor fireplaces are tall structures with high, concentrated dead loads, and most jurisdictions permit them. In many places the footing design has to be produced or reviewed by an engineer, and seismic and wind considerations apply in some regions.

  2. Excavating and pouring the foundation

    The footing goes below the local frost depth where that applies, is sized for the mass above it, and is usually reinforced. Everything about the fireplace's life depends on this and none of it is visible afterwards.

  3. Choosing site-built masonry or a modular firebox system

    A fully site-built firebox and flue is traditional masonry work. A modular or manufactured firebox and chimney system is engineered as an assembly, comes with listed clearances and installation instructions, and is then clad to look like masonry. Both are legitimate; they are inspected against different criteria.

  4. Building the firebox with materials rated for it

    The firebox interior is built in firebrick set in refractory mortar, or is the manufactured unit itself. Ordinary masonry units and ordinary mortar are not intended for sustained direct fire exposure and will deteriorate.

  5. Throat, smoke chamber and flue - the parts that make it draft

    Whether an open fireplace draws smoke up the chimney or spills it into your face is determined by the geometry of the opening, the throat and the smoke chamber, and by the flue size and height relative to that opening. These relationships are set by code and by long-standing masonry practice.

  6. Chimney, height, cap and surroundings

    The stack has to terminate high enough, and far enough from obstructions and nearby roofs, to draft reliably. A cap keeps rain out of the flue and a spark arrestor is required in many areas, particularly in wildfire-prone regions.

  7. Gas, if included, and the hearth extension

    Gas logs or a gas starter mean a licensed gas fitter and a permitted line. In front of the opening, a non-combustible hearth extension protects the surrounding surface from embers and radiant heat.

  8. Cladding, curing, inspection and first fire

    Stone veneer, brick or stucco goes on the structure, the mortar and any refractory work is allowed to cure, and the installation is inspected. The first fires are built small and gradually to bring the masonry up to temperature.

    Watch forA full fire in freshly built or freshly repaired masonry. Rapid heating of green mortar or a damp firebox causes cracking, and the damage happens on day one rather than showing up later.

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • You want people gathered in a circle. A fireplace faces one direction and seats a fraction of the people a fire pit does. If the goal is a social ring around the fire, you want a pit and you will be happier with one.
  • The budget will not carry a proper footing. This is the item that gets trimmed and it is the one that must not be. A leaning or cracked chimney is not a cosmetic problem and it is expensive and disruptive to correct.
  • Your yard is small or the structure will dominate it. These are big objects. On a modest patio a fireplace can block light, block a view and eat the usable space, and it is not something you move later.
  • The site is windy and the stack cannot go high enough. Draft depends on height and on what is around it. If site constraints or an HOA cap the stack height, the fireplace may smoke, and finding that out after it is built is a very bad day.
  • You are in a wildfire-prone area with restrictions on open flame. Some jurisdictions restrict or prohibit outdoor solid-fuel burning entirely, or require specific spark arrestors and clearances. Confirm before designing rather than after.
  • You want it built quickly at the end of a landscaping project. Permit review, an engineered footing, curing time and inspections do not compress. A fireplace rushed to meet a date is the wrong place to save two weeks.

  • What is the footing design, and who produced it? The answer should reference your soil, your frost conditions and the mass of the structure. If the footing is being decided on site, walk away.
  • How is the flue sized relative to the firebox opening? This relationship is what makes it draft. A mason who builds fireplaces will answer confidently; one who does not will change the subject.
  • Site-built or a manufactured firebox, and if manufactured, which model? A listed unit has to be installed within its listing. You want the model name so the installation can be checked against it.
  • What is the permit scope, and what gets inspected? Structure, combustion and any gas may be separate inspections. Knowing which apply tells you whether the contractor has done this before.
  • How tall is the chimney, and how did you decide that? Termination height relative to nearby roofs and obstructions determines whether it works on a windy day.
  • What is the hearth extension in front of the opening? Embers land there. It needs to be non-combustible and adequately sized, and it is easy to overlook in the finish design.
  • Can I see outdoor fireplaces you have built that are several years old and still drafting well? A photograph on the day it was finished tells you about the stonework. Only an older one tells you whether it works.

In most jurisdictions yes, and you should plan on it. These are tall, heavy structures with a combustion appliance in them, so building departments generally want to see a footing detail, the firebox and flue arrangement, and the chimney termination - and to inspect them. Many places also require the footing design to come from or be reviewed by a licensed engineer. Any gas connection is a separate permitted scope. Confirm all of it with your building department early, because it shapes the schedule more than the construction does.
Nearly always a draft problem, and nearly always designed in rather than developed later. The usual causes are a firebox opening that is too large for the flue serving it, a badly shaped throat or smoke chamber, or a chimney that does not terminate high enough or clear enough of nearby roofs and obstructions. Wind conditions at the site can make a marginal design fail on exactly the days you want to use it. Correcting a smoking fireplace often means rebuilding the upper structure, which is why the geometry has to be right before anything is clad.
They serve different purposes and neither is a better version of the other. A fire pit is open and social - people sit all the way around it, everyone sees everyone, and it costs a great deal less. A fireplace is directional: it heats and faces one seating area, gives you a vertical architectural element that can define the edge of an outdoor room, shelters the fire from wind, and vents smoke upward rather than across your guests. If you want a gathering, choose the pit. If you want a room, choose the fireplace.
Longer than most people expect, and the masonry is not the constraint. Permit review and any engineering come first, then the footing has to be poured and gain strength before the structure goes up, then the masonry is built and clad, then mortar and refractory work needs to cure before real fires. Inspections sit between several of those stages. Ask for a schedule showing those dependencies, and treat any proposal that compresses the curing or the inspections as a warning rather than an efficiency.
It can be done and it is a common request, but it becomes a considerably more demanding design. The chimney has to pass through or clear the roof structure with the correct clearances to combustibles, the termination still has to be high enough above the roof to draft, and the surrounding structure has to be detailed for the heat. All of this is code-governed and specific to your structure. Involve the builder and the building department at the design stage, not once the cover is already up.
Less than an indoor one in terms of use, but it is exposed to the weather constantly, which is its own problem. The cap and any spark arrestor should be checked so rain and debris stay out of the flue and embers stay in. Mortar joints, particularly on the stack and the crown, should be inspected periodically because water getting into masonry and freezing is what opens joints. If you burn wood regularly, the flue needs sweeping and inspecting on the same basis as any other chimney.
