How hot tub electrical installation actually works

  1. Load assessment at the panel

    Before anything is run, the electrician establishes whether your service and panel can carry the spa on top of everything else in the house. That is a calculation, not a glance at the empty slots.

    Watch for: Empty breaker spaces being treated as proof of capacity. Space and capacity are different things. If the answer is that capacity is short, that is a separate project — see electrical panel upgrade.

  2. Designing the circuit as a dedicated supply

    A hard-wired spa gets its own circuit serving nothing else. Sharing it with garden lighting, an outbuilding or an outlet defeats the protection scheme and makes fault-finding far harder later.

    Watch for: A proposal to tap an existing outdoor circuit "since it is already there". That is the shortcut that turns a spa into a hazard, and it is exactly the kind of work that fails inspection.

  3. Ground-fault protection

    The spa supply is protected by a device that monitors current flowing out against current returning and cuts the supply when the difference indicates leakage — leakage that would otherwise pass through a person in the water. This is the single most important protective element in the whole installation.

    Watch for: Protection that trips constantly being "solved" by removing it or bypassing it. Nuisance tripping means something is wrong — often moisture in a connection or a failing heater element — and the answer is diagnosis, never defeat.

  4. The disconnecting means

    A spa must have a way to cut power that a person in the water, or someone helping them, can operate without reaching over or into the spa. It is a switch you can get to in an emergency, and it is also what an engineer uses to make the spa safe before servicing it.

    Watch for: A disconnect fitted somewhere convenient for the installer rather than reachable in an emergency — inside a garage, behind the spa, or at the panel on the far side of the house. Where it must go is defined by code and checked at inspection.

  5. Bonding the metal around the spa

    Bonding ties together the conductive things in and around the spa — equipment, metal fittings, nearby railings and structural metal, reinforcement in concrete — so they cannot sit at different electrical potentials. It is not the same thing as grounding, and it is the element homeowners most often have never heard of.

    Watch for: A quote that never mentions bonding. If nobody has looked at what metal is near your spa and said what happens to it, that quote is incomplete. Which items must be bonded and how is a code question and an inspection question.

  6. Routing, enclosures and weather

    The run from panel to spa is installed in a manner rated for its environment — buried, surface-run, or through structure — with weatherproof enclosures and connections appropriate to outdoor use.

    Watch for: Indoor-rated boxes, unsealed entries, or cable run where a spade or a mower will eventually find it. Water in an outdoor connection is the most common cause of a spa circuit tripping months after installation.

  7. Final connection, permit and inspection

    The electrician makes the connection at the spa's equipment bay, tests the protective devices, and — in most jurisdictions — the work is inspected before the spa is filled and energised.

    Watch for: Being encouraged to fill and run the spa before sign-off "so it is warm for the weekend". Requirements vary by area; check via the permits guides and keep the certificate. It is what an insurer will ask for.

Because it is detecting current going somewhere it should not — and that is the device working, not failing. Common causes are moisture in an outdoor connection, a degraded heater element, a failing pump seal, or damage to the supply run. It needs diagnosing by an electrician or a spa technician. Never resolve a tripping spa circuit by removing or bypassing the protection.
There is a defined requirement, and it is set by the electrical code as adopted in your jurisdiction rather than by any national rule of thumb you might read online. The principle is consistent: it must be reachable by someone at the spa without them having to reach across or into the water, and visible from it. Your electrician sizes and sites it, and the inspector confirms it.
Only after it is verified, and often not then. Codes change, the previous spa may have had different requirements, the run may have degraded underground, and you frequently have no record of who installed it or whether it was ever inspected. Have the electrician assess it honestly and be prepared for the answer to be a new run.
In most places a spa supply is permitted and inspected work, and the two are not interchangeable — the permit records that the work happened and the inspection independently confirms it was done correctly.
