Poured pad, compacted gravel or spa pads — here is how each one actually behaves over time.
Hot tub pad preparation is building the surface a spa will stand on so that it carries the load evenly and stays level for years. The principle behind every option is the same: a spa shell is engineered to be supported continuously across its base, not held up at a few points. The three common answers are a poured concrete pad, a compacted crushed-stone bed, and proprietary interlocking spa pads. Which is right depends on your ground, your frost conditions and the spa's own requirements.

Read the spa manufacturer's base requirement first
Every spa comes with a stated support requirement, and it is not generic. It will specify what kind of support is acceptable and what condition the surface must be in. That document, not a general rule, is what your installation must satisfy.
Watch for: Nobody producing it. If the dealer cannot give you the manufacturer's base specification, you cannot prove later that you met it — and meeting it is usually a condition of the shell warranty.
Assess what is actually under the spot
The base is only as good as the ground beneath it. Topsoil, recent fill, a filled-in trench or the disturbed ground around a new build will all continue to compress under load long after the surface looks finished.
Watch for: Building a good base on bad ground. A perfect slab on soft fill still sinks — it just sinks in one piece. Where the ground is questionable, the excavation goes down to something that will not move.
Understanding point loading against distributed support
A full spa with bathers is a large mass. Spread evenly across the base of the shell, it is manageable. Concentrated onto a few high spots — a proud paving slab, a stone in the gravel, an uneven pad — the same total weight becomes intense local pressure on the shell.
Watch for: Levelling a spa with shims, bricks or timber offcuts under the corners. This is common, it looks like it works, and it is exactly the point-loading failure the shell is not designed for. Level the base, never the spa.
Choosing the base type
A poured pad gives a rigid, continuous, permanent surface and is the default where ground is stable and the spa is staying. A compacted crushed-stone bed drains freely and tolerates seasonal movement better, and it can be repaired by re-levelling. Interlocking spa pads are fast, need a well-prepared and drained subgrade beneath them, and suit smaller units.
Watch for: Choosing on price alone. In freezing climates a free-draining stone bed often outperforms a thin slab because it does not trap water to freeze; in soft ground a properly founded slab may be the only thing that stays put. The right answer is site-specific.
Excavation, subgrade and compaction
Whatever goes on top, the ground beneath is dug out to remove organic and loose material and then compacted in layers. Compaction in thin lifts with a plate compactor is what makes the difference between a base that holds and one that settles.
Watch for: Material tipped in to full depth and compacted once at the top. The lower part never densifies, and it settles gradually over the first couple of years — which is precisely when you notice the spa has gone out of level.
Frost and drainage detailing
Where ground freezes, water trapped under a base expands and lifts it, and does so unevenly. The defences are the same in every case: keep water from collecting under the base, use free-draining material, and fall the surrounding ground away from the spa.
Watch for: A base built into a hollow. If the spa sits in the lowest point of the garden, water arrives there whatever you do. Raise the base above the surrounding grade and give the water somewhere else to go.
Getting it flat, and checking it
The requirement is a flat, level plane across the whole footprint — checked in both directions and across the diagonals, not just along one edge. Spa manufacturers state a tolerance; the practical target is that a long straightedge sits down everywhere.
Watch for: Checking level with a short spirit level. A short level can read true across every 30cm of a base that has a slow dish in the middle. Use a long straightedge across the full span.
Curing and clearance before delivery
A poured pad needs time before it takes load. A stone bed needs to be finished, compacted and clear of loose material. Either way, the base must be complete before the delivery date, and sized so the cabinet is fully supported with the surround clear.
Watch for: A base cut exactly to the spa footprint with no margin. Cabinets need their full outline supported, and you need somewhere to stand. Overhang at any edge is the start of a cracked corner.
The base is usually the second-largest site cost after electrical, and it varies enormously with ground conditions. A compacted stone bed on good ground is modest; a poured pad requiring excavation of soft fill is not. Get the base quoted as its own line, separate from delivery, before you commit to a spa.

What does my spa's manufacturer specify for its base, and are you building to that?
The answer should reference the actual document. This is the specification your warranty is measured against, so the base builder needs to have read it.
How deep are you excavating, and what are you taking out?
Removing topsoil and loose fill down to firm ground is the part that determines whether it settles. A number and a reason is a good answer; "we'll level it off" is not.
How are you compacting, and in what thickness of layers?
Compaction in thin lifts is the single most skipped step in base building and the direct cause of settlement a year or two later.
How will water drain away from and beneath the base?
Water under a base is the mechanism behind frost heave and softening. There should be a deliberate answer, not just a shrug at the slope of the garden.
How will you check level, and across what span?
You want to hear about a long straightedge or a laser across the full footprint and both diagonals — not a short spirit level in one direction.
Is the base sized larger than the spa footprint, and by how much?
The whole cabinet outline needs support and you need somewhere to stand and to service it. A base cut exactly to size is a base the spa will eventually overhang.
How long before it can take the spa?
Particularly for a poured pad. Delivering onto a base that has not reached strength risks damage you will not see until later, and delivery slots are hard to move.
