Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Each season stresses the roof differently: spring brings storm damage and the best time to inspect, summer heat and attic humidity age shingles, fall is for clearing gutters before the leaves and rain, and winter brings ice dams, snow load and freeze-thaw damage.
Do the two real inspections in spring and fall. Spring catches winter damage while there is a whole building season ahead to fix it. Fall catches anything that will get much worse under snow and ice.
Winter is the season that punishes neglected roofs. Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that then refreezes at the cold eaves, forcing water back under the shingles. The fix is insulation and ventilation, not roof heating cables — those manage the symptom.
On scheduling a replacement: contractors are busiest in late summer and fall, and quieter in the depths of winter. Any modest off-season price advantage has to be weighed against weather delays and cold-weather installation constraints. Fixr puts a typical replacement at between one and seven days of work, so a stretch of settled weather matters.
