A natural stone patio uses quarried slabs — flagstone, bluestone, limestone, sandstone, granite — either dry-laid on a compacted base or mortar-set on a concrete slab. Unlike manufactured pavers, stone arrives with real variation in thickness, colour and shape, so much of the labour is selecting, fitting and sometimes cutting each piece into place. That hand-work is the main thing you are paying for, and it is also what makes the result look unrepeatable.

How natural stone patio installation actually works

  1. Choosing the stone — and seeing the actual pallets

    Stone is sold by type, by finish and by origin, and two pallets of the same nominal product can look meaningfully different. Colour range, cleft texture, thickness range and how well the pieces fit together all vary. This is a decision to make at a yard, in daylight, with the stone wet as well as dry.

    Watch for: Choosing from a photograph or a single sample piece. Also ask specifically what happens if the delivered pallets do not match what you selected — get the remedy agreed before delivery, not after it is laid.

  2. Deciding dry-laid or mortar-set — this drives everything after it

    Dry-laid stone sits on a compacted aggregate base with sand or stone dust joints; it can move slightly, drains through the joints, and individual pieces can be lifted and reset. Mortar-set stone is bedded in mortar on a concrete slab, which gives a rigid, tight-jointed surface and needs a properly built slab beneath it.

    Watch for: Mortar-set stone proposed over an existing slab without anyone assessing that slab. If the slab cracks or moves, the mortar joints crack with it, and repairing a mortared stone patio is far more invasive than resetting a dry-laid one.

  3. Thickness selection and what it forces

    Thin stone is cheaper by area and generally intended to be set in mortar over a rigid slab. Thicker stone can be dry-laid because each piece is heavy and stiff enough to bridge and stay put. Getting this pairing wrong is the most common structural mistake on stone patios.

    Watch for: Thin flagstone being dry-laid on sand to save the cost of a slab. It rocks, it breaks underfoot, and there is no fixing it short of taking it up.

  4. Base or slab preparation

    For dry-laid work, the same compacted aggregate base a paver patio needs, with the slope shaped to carry water away from the house. For mortar-set work, a properly formed, reinforced and cured concrete slab that carries the load and does not move.

    Watch for: Setting mortar on a slab that has not cured, or on ground that has not been prepared as carefully as it would be for a slab in its own right. Everything above only performs as well as this does.

  5. Dry-fitting the field

    With irregular stone, pieces are laid out and shuffled before anything is bedded — matching edges, keeping joint widths consistent, distributing the large and small pieces and the colour range across the whole field rather than in patches.

    Watch for: A patio where all the big pieces are near the door and the offcuts are in the far corner, or where several similar-coloured stones cluster. Once the field is bedded this is expensive to undo, so it should be resolved while everything is still loose.

  6. Cutting and fitting

    Irregular stone is trimmed to close up joints and to finish the perimeter cleanly; cut stone is squared to the layout. Exposed edges are usually chipped or dressed so a sawn face is not left facing the lawn.

    Watch for: Wide, inconsistent joints being accepted because closing them takes cutting time. Joint width is the clearest visual signal of how much care went into a stone patio — and dust control matters here for the same reasons it does on any stone or concrete cutting.

  7. Setting the stone and levelling piece by piece

    Each piece is bedded individually and checked, because thickness varies between stones — the bedding layer absorbs that variation so the walking surface stays consistent. This is slow, and the slowness is most of the labour cost.

    Watch for: Rocking stones at handover. Walk the whole patio and stand on the corner of every piece. A stone that rocks now will only get worse, and it is a trip hazard as well as a defect.

  8. Jointing, curing and cleanup

    Dry-laid joints are filled with sand, stone dust or a polymeric product; mortared joints are pointed and have to cure without being walked on or rained on. Mortar smears must be cleaned off before they set, because some stones stain permanently.

    Watch for: Mortar or grout haze left to dry on a porous stone. Removing it later can involve acids that damage the surface of certain stone types, so the time to deal with it is on the day.

Stone slabs are heavier than they look and thin ones break unpredictably when levered or dropped. Two-person lifts, gloves and toe protection are the baseline, and cutting stone requires wet cutting or extraction plus a respirator.

"Flagstone" is a description of form rather than a specific rock — it means flat sedimentary stone split into slabs suitable for paving, and it can be sandstone, limestone, quartzite or several other types depending on the region. "Bluestone" refers to particular quarried stones known for their colour and consistency. In practice this matters because hardness, porosity and freeze-thaw behaviour follow the actual rock type, not the marketing name. Ask what the stone is geologically and where it was quarried.
Dry-laid is the more forgiving choice in climates with ground movement: joints are open, water drains through, and individual stones can be lifted and reset if something settles. Mortar-set gives tight joints, a rigid surface and a more formal look, but it needs a sound concrete slab underneath and it cracks where the slab moves. Thickness of stone follows from this decision — thick stone for dry-laid, thinner stone for mortar-set — so make it first.
It depends heavily on the stone. Porous stones stain more readily and may benefit from a penetrating sealer, particularly near a grill or a dining area; dense stones often need nothing at all. Sealers also change the appearance — some deepen the colour noticeably — and they wear and need reapplication. Ask the supplier what they recommend for the specific stone you have chosen and test any product on an offcut before it goes on the patio.
Often, and it is usually worth investigating, because the stone itself is generally the most durable part and older stone can be difficult to match. On dry-laid patios the stones are lifted, the base is corrected and recompacted, and the same pieces go back. On mortared patios it is more involved — the stone has to come off the bed intact, which is not always possible, and any slab problems underneath have to be resolved first. Have someone assess it in person before deciding.
It can be, and the honest answer is that it depends on the finish and the location rather than on stone as a category. Natural cleft surfaces have texture and generally perform well; smooth, honed or polished finishes are much less forgiving when wet. Shade, overhanging trees and constant damp encourage algae, which is what makes most patios slippery regardless of material. If the patio is on a shaded side of the house, prioritise texture and plan on periodic cleaning.
Because the units are not identical. Manufactured pavers are the same size and thickness every time, so laying is fast and repetitive. Natural stone varies in thickness, shape and edge, so each piece is selected, often trimmed, and individually bedded to bring the walking surface level. That is skilled, slow work, and on irregular stone the fitting labour can be a larger share of the total than the stone itself.
