Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Insulation itself needs no maintenance - it needs inspection. Once a year, look in the attic for water stains, uneven or compressed coverage, rodent activity, and insulation blocking soffit vents. Fixr puts blown-in insulation's practical life at 20-30 years and fiberglass material life at 80-100 years, but disturbance, not age, is what usually degrades performance.
The annual attic check takes ten minutes. Look for: dark staining on the insulation surface (air leaking through the ceiling), water marks on the underside of the roof deck, droppings or tunnels in loose-fill, stored items compressing the material, and insulation pushed up against the eaves where the soffit vents should be breathing.
Compression is the quiet performance killer. Insulation only works because of the still air trapped in it. Boxes stored on top of attic batts, or a plywood storage platform laid straight on the joists, cut the R-value under them substantially. If you need attic storage, build it raised above the insulation depth rather than crushing it.
Rodent damage matters more than it looks. Beyond the mess, tunnels create air channels through the insulation layer and contaminated material is a legitimate reason for removal. Handle the animals first - insulating over an active rodent problem just gives them better bedding.
After any work in the attic - a rewire, a new bath fan, HVAC service, a roof repair - go back up and look. Trades work fast in attics and routinely leave insulation shoved aside, baffles knocked out, and hatches uninsulated. Ten minutes of checking preserves a job you already paid for.
