Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Insulation can be installed year-round, and the best time to schedule is spring or fall - crews are less booked and attic conditions are tolerable. Winter and summer are when you diagnose: cold drafts and ice dams in winter, a hot upstairs in summer, both pointing at the same ceiling-plane air leakage and thin attic coverage.
Winter is diagnostic season. Walk the house on a cold, windy day with the back of your hand near outlets, baseboards, window trim and the attic hatch. What you feel is your air sealing list. Ice dams after a snowfall tell you heat is escaping into the attic and melting snow from below - that is an air sealing and insulation problem, not a gutter problem.
Summer is the other half of the picture. A hot second floor in July usually means thin ceiling insulation, ducts running through a superheated attic, or soffit vents blocked by insulation. Attics get brutally hot, which is also why crews prefer not to work up there in midsummer afternoons - expect early starts if you schedule then.
Spring and fall are the practical windows. Attic temperatures are workable, contractors are less backed up than during the first cold snap, and you have time to get multiple bids without heating-season urgency pushing you into the first quote. Combined air sealing and insulation saves up to 10% of annual energy bills per ENERGY STAR, so getting it done before winter rather than during it captures a full season.
One timing trap: the emergency-adjacent sale. The week after the first hard freeze is when door-knocking and "we were working in your neighborhood" calls spike. Cold discomfort is a poor state in which to sign a five-figure contract. If the house is uncomfortable now, buy a space heater and take two more weeks to get bids.
