How many roofing nails you need

Standard 3-tab and architectural shingles use a 4-nail pattern — about 320 nails per square (100 sq ft). High-wind zones and steep roofs use a 6-nail pattern, around 480 per square. Roughly 140 coil nails (1¼") weigh a pound, so a full roof usually needs several pounds plus a bit extra.

Cost ranges reflect 2026 U.S. installed prices (BLS producer/labor data, Remodeling Cost vs. Value, and manufacturer pricing). Your real price depends on your roof, region, and pro — see the full cost guide.

About 320 nails per square with the standard 4-nail pattern, or roughly 480 with the 6-nail high-wind pattern.
Roughly 140 nails per pound for common 1¼" coil roofing nails. Longer nails weigh more, so you get fewer per pound.
Most asphalt shingle jobs use 1¼" nails over a single layer; go longer (1½"–2") over an existing layer or thick decking so the nail bites at least ¾" into the wood.
In high-wind regions, on steep slopes, and per many manufacturer warranties. Using six nails per shingle boosts wind resistance and is often required to keep the warranty valid.
