This is a rate calculation: a per-square-foot installed price multiplied by how much roof you have. The output is a range, not a single number, because the same roof genuinely does cost different amounts depending on who installs it and what they find when the old roof comes off.

The width of that range is information. If the low and high are far apart, the material is one where installer skill and job complexity swing the price a lot - get more quotes.

Steeper costs more twice over: there is literally more roof, and the crew works slower on it. That is why a 12/12 roof is not 41% more expensive than a flat footprint - it is more.

Before you start

Getting your inputs right

The answer is only as good as what goes in. This is where estimates usually go wrong.

  1. Establish the roof age first

    This decides the whole project sequence. Panels outlast a shingle roof that is already part-way through its life, and removing an array to re-roof underneath is a cost you can avoid by doing the roof first.

  2. Note orientation and shading

    Only part of your roof is worth covering. Which way the productive slopes face, and what shades them through the day, decides how much of your area is actually in play.

  3. Convert footprint to roof area

    Measure length × width at the eaves, then multiply by your pitch factor - a sloped roof has more surface than the ground it covers. The area calculator does both steps.

What changes your number

A calculator applies an average. These are the things that decide where in the range you actually land.

  • Roof age at install Panels typically outlast a shingle roof that is already part-way through its life. Putting solar on an ageing roof means paying to remove and reset it later.
  • Orientation and shading The generating half of the equation depends on which way the roof faces and what shades it. Two identical roofs can have very different solar cases.
  • Integrated versus attached Solar shingles replace the roof covering; panels mount on top of it. Different products, different repair paths, very different prices.
  • Pitch and access Steep roofs need staging and fall protection and simply go slower. A roof a crew cannot walk costs meaningfully more than the same area at a walkable slope.
  • Roofline complexity Every valley, dormer, chimney, and skylight is cutting, flashing, and waste. Two roofs of identical area can differ substantially if one is a plain gable and the other is cut up.

Common mistakes

Every one of these is something people genuinely do, and most of them cost real money.

  • Solar on a roof near end of life The most expensive sequence is solar first, roof second. If the roof has under a decade left, do the roof first.
  • Comparing solar roofing to roofing alone An integrated solar roof is two purchases in one. Comparing its per-square-foot price against plain shingle is not a like-for-like comparison.

A solar roof uses roofing material that generates power - a premium, integrated look. Attaching panels to a standard roof is far cheaper per watt and still the best value for most homes. Honest limits

Where this stops being accurate

A rate model cannot see your roof. It does not know your pitch, how many layers have to come off, whether the decking underneath is rotten, or how many chimneys and valleys the crew has to cut around. Those factors routinely move a real quote 20-40% off a rate estimate in either direction.

Plain language

The terms on your quote, explained

A roofing quote is written in trade vocabulary. These are the words that actually change what you are paying for.

Square
100 square feet of roof surface. The unit the entire trade orders, prices, and quotes in - a 2,400 sq ft roof is 24 squares.
Pitch
The slope, written as rise over a 12-inch run. A roof climbing 6 inches per 12 horizontal inches is "6/12".
Decking (sheathing)
The structural panels over the rafters that everything else fastens to. Its condition is unknown until the old covering is off.
Underlayment
The water-resistant layer between decking and covering. Synthetic or felt; it is the roof's second line of defense.
Flashing
Metal that seals the joins - around chimneys, walls, valleys and vents. Most roof leaks are flashing failures, not covering failures.
Drip edge
Metal at the roof edge that directs water into the gutter instead of behind it. Usually a code requirement.
Valley
Where two roof planes meet and channel water. High-volume, cut-heavy, and a common leak point.
Ridge vent
Exhaust ventilation along the ridge. Only works if matched by intake at the soffits.
Tear-off
Removing the existing covering. One layer is priced into most quotes; a second or third is extra labor and disposal.
Low slope
Roughly 3/12 and below, where standard shingle rules stop applying and membrane systems or special underlayment come in.
